Long time Hashimoto's here. Why do we need to check ferritin, and how is it different than checking iron? Thank you.

Ferritin is often regarded as the only test required. If that is OK, then you don't have any problems. However this is a naive interpretation and seems to be done largely to avoid the cost of doing a more complete set of iron tests.

In particular, if you have inflammation, your ferritin will rise. Therefore just testing ferritin could see an acceptable result but only because inflammation is making it higher than it would be without inflammation.
