Selenium Supplementation in Patients with Hashimoto Thyroiditis:A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials

Published Online:16 Feb 2024doi.org/10.1089/thy.2023.0556

Conclusions: In people with HT without THRT, selenium was effective and safe in lowering TSH, TPOAb, and MDA levels. Indications for lowering TPOAb were found independent of THRT.

To anyone considering supplementing with Selenium, please be aware that supplements of 400ug have been found to be toxic. Doses of 200ug are recommended for those with active thyroid eye disease for 6 months, lowering to 100ug as a maintenance dose. It’s important NOT to supplement in tablet form AND eat Brazil nuts at the same time (as each nut can contain 50-90ug selenium depending on soil type).

You absolutely have to consider your diet before the dose of any selenium supplement. How much selenium do you think you might be getting already?

I can see no reason to go above 100 micrograms of selenium. Indeed, in the long-term, 50 micrograms would probably be more than enough. After all, you are unlikely to have a totally selenium-free diet.

Just adding: Except as described by Buddy195

I think, how much you should take is very individual and depends on comorbidities (e.g. poor absorption due to autoimmune gastritis).

I take 200 µg daily and my selenium level (serum) at 90 µg/l is well in the reference range and probably even below an optimal value.

If I stop taking it, it doesn't take long for me to feel like I'm underdosing on LT4.

It is important to distinguish between the two forms of selenium. Selenomethionine accumulates in the tissue, sodium selenite is excreted. In any case, using sodium selenite is safer.

I take 500 ug of Selenium as part of an Osteocare supplement to try and help with Osteoporosis in my hip. I did read a medical study years ago that 200mg is the dose recommended to lower Hashi antibodies when taken with Myo-inositol. I did try it for a while but needed other things, and decided in the end that if I took everything, I'd be practically swallowing a pharmacy and breaking the bank balance 😄
