FUMING, Bloody GP's

posting as otherwise I will wind up having a hissy fit. Not really a thyroid issue but just shows how poor the system is.

Had a smear December 14th, had had some niggling worries so thought right sort it out. Phoned GP's to ask for signposting to appropriate service. I was told we'll book you in here with *****, person I have run ins with at surgery. They were adamant that I had to have it done there, that there was no longer an option to chose where I had it. Well , I have never had smears done at my surgery, just doesn't sit well with me for various reason's.

Anyway sorted out smear at a sexual health clinic not too far away. It ended up like show and tell, a practitioner, training another practitioner. Lots of anxious looks shared between them, explained they found a polyp, growing out of my cervix. Went and got a Dr to check and all agreed it needed sorting. Letter sent to GP asking I be referred to Gynaecology, on same day. Records show it was done that day. So I hadn't heard anything called GP to check they told me to ring Hospital myself, couldn't give me referral number or phone number to help. Got through to hospital eventually then they told me I was in the routine, nothing to see hear pile and they might be in touch in 4 months, maybe longer. Explained to the person my concerns, constant backache, intermittent bleeding, episodes of bad period type pains , cramping, she said I would have to get GP to re refer and add symptoms. Call surgery, told you'll need to see a Dr but we don't have any appointments , shock, ring at 8 am and try and win the appointment lottery. Might if lucky get a telephone call in the afternoon but couldn't guarantee it. Then before hanging up, asked if daughters Dr had got back with answer to my request. Daughter B12 def, had 6 loading doses over the christmas period, then told she would need to wait till end of March. Well not sure who answered but disappointed if it was prescribing Doc. Response was no , she can't have anymore before March, she had the maximum allowed and must wait. She would be overdosed , she has never heard of every other day jabs, that would be dangerous. I said but she is so fatigued, brain fog , aches and pains , nauseous, can't get a proper sleep, has only attended school a couple of days since Christmas break. Apparently if she is still having symptoms that can't possibly be the B12, it must be something else and they'll need to look into it. She has had several appointments at Alder Hey, US, MRI, CT more bloods, Consultant at Alder Hey had asked that we ask GP for some hypnotics and possibly anxiety meds but they don't want to do that either.

presumably your daughter has had full thyroid testing plus thyroid antibodies, vitamin D, folate and full iron panel including ferritin

well not full thyroid, that would be too much to expect, 29th Nov, TSH 1.9 (0.27 - 4.20) FT4 18 (12.00-22.00) no FT3 no antibodies, thought there might be different ranges for under 18 can't find them. Vit D not done, Serum B12 2000 (197- 771) serum folate 2.3 (3.9-26.8) ESR 16 (2-19)

vit D 30 . Given folic acid and vit D , first supply of vit D Clear gel caps she was ok with next was small yellow and white capsules which she says make her through up, .

Guess it's time to print out everything NICE guidelines B12, etc try and get more investigations give me bloody strength

So once she finishes prescription folic acid she needs to look at self supplementing a daily vitamin B complex

Low folate

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid)

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and may help maintain B12 levels between Injections

Difference between folate and folic acid

healthline.com/nutrition/fo...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule)

Thorne currently difficult to find at reasonable price, should be around £20-£25. iherb.com often have in stock. Or try ebay

Igennus B complex popular option too. Nice small tablets. Most people only find they need one per day. But a few people find it’s not high enough dose

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg)

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly when supplementing

Can test via NHS private testing service

serum folate 2.3 (3.9-26.8)

Do you know WHY folate is so low?

performancelab.com/blogs/mu...

Peronally I DETEST folic acid as a method to try and raise folate.

I feel for your daughter's situation but (personally) I would try to avoid hypnotics and/or anti anxiety meds.

What about you? Please don't let your name remain in the "nothing to see here" pile of appointments - what options do you have?

Hope you get somewhere with your poor daughter that is awful.

Don’t half agree with you about GPs. I can ring first thing and either get to see someone or have a phone consultation later that morning and they always answer their phones etc which has to be good - however - I am trying to get a routine appointment with a particular GP - she told me to book one.

Instead I was told they didn’t have any - for the forseeable future BUT the receptionist sent me an online link available for seven days - and if I’m lucky a routine appointment will be released either am or pm.

Trouble is none of the four!!! appointments that I have seen this week have been in my surgery the only ones I’ve seen have been in other practices in the group which are miles away and none of them with the person I need to see.

My seven days run out tomorrow so I suppose I’ll have to try and get another online link for another seven days 🤣🤣🤣 It really is a lottery.

I had a bad reaction to a BP medication, I could not see straight, or walk without falling over and crashing into things. GP took one look and decided I had had a brain bleed and she would contact the hospital for an emergency scan. She did this, I have seen the notes.

The hospital sent me a appointment for the eye clinic in two months time....

I was not that worried, as the symptoms went as soon as I stopped the BP meds.
