During the summer I drank some coffee liquor which bought on a bad anxiety attack which wouldn't subside. This was getting on for three months ago now and I still don't feel right. Anxiety spike around the time of my period also which is hard. I also have hypothyroidism. Could anyone please offer any suggestions to help me feel better?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

welcome to the forum

Anxiety is extremely common hypothyroid symptom

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

What vitamin supplements are you taking

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

If anxiety worse at period request GP test full iron panel test including ferritin

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

On T3 - day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day with last dose 8-12 hours before test

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Thank you so much for the detailed response. Currently taking 125mg of levothyroxine and brands do tend to vary.

Not really currently taking any vitamins. Do you recommend any?

WE recommend testing your vitamin levels as per the above post. You can ask your GP to test ferritin, folate, B12 & D3 and sometimes they will, otherwise you need to use a private blood test. Post results in a new post when you have them.

Can you share them here along with the reference range for each test?

This is normal apparently

Your B12 is actually pretty low. The range is too wide and cut off too low.

Are you vegan or vegetarian? If not:

B12 - do you have symptoms of B12 deficiency? The reference range for B12 is very wide and cut off point too low. theb12society.com/signs-and...

If you do then you should discuss this with your doctor for further tests for Pernicious Anaemia.

If not, then start with a methyl B12 sublingual spray or lozenge for a week, then add a good B complex. Once you run out of the separate B12 just continue with the B complex.

Aim for around 20 on that range for folate. A food methyl B complex will help keep all the B vitamins in balance. I will list some choices:

Slightly cheaper options with inactive B6:

Contains B6 as P5P an active form:

Ferritin should be around 90 - 100 for best use of thyroid hormone. Suggest increasing iron rich foods in diet and eating them often. Chicken livers, pate, red meat etc

No result for vit D.

I don't drink any at all since

So work on improving low folate and B12 by supplementing separate B12 and a week later add separate Vitamin B complex

Meanwhile increase iron rich foods in your diet

Get vitamin D levels tested

Aiming for vitamin D at least over 80nmol

Test twice yearly via NHS private testing service when supplementing

There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7.
