Hi, I tested +ve for covid this morning. It's the first time I've had it. I've had 5 vacs. My temperature is high & I'm taking paracetamol for that.My question is, should I alter my T4/NDT dose? I haven't been ill at all since I started on thyroid meds in 2015.
I wondered if I should increase, decrease or stay the same?
Thanks

I did have to increase my T3 meds when I got COVID a few months ago because I suddenly got very hypo (e.g. very slow HR) once I was past the first couple of days (I was quite ill with it, wracking fevers etc.). I wouldn't necessarily anticipate anything and alter dose as yet - see how you go day by day, and if your temperature/HR drop to hypo levels, that would be a sign to increase. I think just stay as you are for the moment and rest as much as you can, and see how you feel once the fever has died down. COVID does seem to impact a lot of people's thyroid levels (my thyroid specialist has noticed this). If it does for you, you might only need to adjust your dose for a month or so, and then once fully over the COVID, you'll know if you need to decrease again by symptoms.
Thank you very much. That is helpful. So far HR is ok. Just very high temperature & serious headache. I have cancelled work this week, which is difficult as I am self employed. But I intend to rest as much as possible.
You're doing the right thing resting (also keeping off any exercise for a few months is a good idea) as it reduces your chances of developing Long Covid, the risk of which is significantly higher for women.
And despite what the Government says, by self-isolating you could be saving a life.
When I thought I had C, my endo increased methimazole 4x my normal dose. This was based on other patients and that my TSH dropped after first shot. I got super hypothyroid after even a month later with carpal tunnel, joint paint, shivering and fatigue. I’m actually scared to get C again just because I had such horrible hypothyroidism. The only reaction I had from C was extreme fatigue.
Thank you. I tried really hard not to get covid. I always wear an ffp2 mask & keep my distance etc. But people here do t have to test or be off work so now it's hard to avoid. Lots of people say " I've got a really bad cold", but don't test.
If you can get hold of some (it's available online) and it isn't contraindicated for you, taking low dose "baby" aspirin for a couple of weeks after catching Covid-19 should reduce your chance of developing blood clots.
Good luck. When had the dreaded in 2020 and was hospitalised I had to have my levo reduced to 100 daily as opposed to 100/125 alt days, for the 10 days I was in. I was on my usual dose on discharge and had a blood test to check 6 weeks later (I think) and it was fine.
I've never had COVID so can't comment on that but all through the pandemic proper+since, as classed as 'vulnerable' due to age, I tried to do what doctors in the USA said re supplementation to protect from the virus. Many of the supplements they stated are part of the regime for thyroid patients: D3, zinc, selenium. Added to those were Vit C+ Quercitin. All are so beneficial if you catch COVID, too, at reducing the length of infection. Zinc+Quercitin together prevent replication of any virus in your cells, so I understand. It's certainly kept me safe for more than 3 years without a COVID jab. I trust you recover quickly.
I understand from US Drs I listened too whilst the world was panicking that zinc prevents replication of any virus in your cells but you need quercitin to get get the zinc into your cells, ie zinc is the bullet+quercitin the gun! Neither my GP or Endo had heard of quercitin! Mind you, the Endo discharged me after 1st appt, no doubt because I challenged her thinking+didn't bow down@her feet! I rely on this forum for my thyroid education+certainly not the NHS!
For Quercitin, Solgar is a good brand. Also, Holland+Barrett do a quercitin+Vit C. For the D3+K2 spray I buy Better You. My daughter has gut issues+got her B12 patches+Magnesium ones. So I have found ways round gut issues via patches+/or sprays. My go to supplementation is D3+K2, zinc, selenium, quercitin and B complex. Magnesium is also essential+I find it helps with constipation, the bane of my life!!
D3 in combination with K2 though because otherwise it doesn't absorb so well. I too had a recommendation from friends in South Africa regarding a vitamin supplement regime. Due to having AF I've had my vaccines but I still do the vitamin regime.
