Graves Carbimazole Done

I am "happy" to report that I have yet another rather nasty bruise 🙄 (hopefully you can see the photo) .... oddly only bruising easily since being on this medication yet the Consultant insists this is NOT a side effect of the medication ...? I also woke up with prolonged and severe cramp in my calve which has left me struggling to walk as that feels bruised inside too - YAY GO ME!

I've had some unbelievable knocks in my time, even broken bones and NEVER have I EVER bruised up like this ....

... 🙃 . 🥴

Pictbiker,

I am a Hashi sufferers (not Graves) but even I know Carbimazole can occasionally reduce WBC's to a dangerous level where symptoms include sore throat, fever and/or severe bruising. Send your endo a link to the NICE guidelines under the BNF's Patient and Carer Advice which states ...

'Patient and carer advice For carbimazole

Warn patient or carers to tell doctor immediately if sore throat, mouth ulcers, bruising, fever, malaise, or non-specific illness develops'.

Thank you for responding - I would but I’ve ditched him 😂😂😂 I don’t have cold/flu symptoms anymore but I’ll send it to the next one when I’m allocated - I have a loooong history of medical negligence which they won’t acknowledge… 🙄

I’ve scrubbed out personal data but for clarity please see photo - I’d like to note I’ve no further consultations only one further blood test on 25th September

I suggest you get a second opinion.

I'm no expert but have had a brief look online and everywhere is saying that bruising when taking carbimazole can be an early sign of changes to blood cells.

Could you ask your pharmacist as they should have a good idea.

If the side effect you are experiencing is rare then the doctor you were seeing may not have seen it before.

Thank you - I’m consultant free atm and in the process of being re referred so I’ll see if there is a pharmacy open somewhere although I’m not holding any hope I’m repeatedly ignored it’s kind of thing with me which you’ll see on other posts - oddly it really doesn’t hurt … so that’s something … 😂😂😂😂🙄😂😂😂😂

Have you mentioned this issue to your GP?

If the bruising is being caused by the carb then you should stop taking it.

in reply to Jaydee1507

My consultant didn’t actually tell me there wasn’t an issue he wrote to my GP so they’re aware of it … if I stop taking it my numbers will rocket again so … 🤷‍♀️ GP is the one re referring me too … I’m sure it’ll be fine 🙂

Please stop making comments like that, even in jest… I’m sure your son would have a piss-poor future without you in it even if he could sue the NHS, which I doubt. My daughter tried to commit suicide earlier this year, so this sort of talk really strikes a nerve in me. Thankfully, she failed (on both occasions) and she’s now on a long road to recovery but, I know, her two children would have been devastated by her loss, as would I…

Even if you have to resort to self-medicating and asking questions and getting the answers you need here, it has to be better than potentially depriving your son of his mum.

Sorry if this is a bit of a rant, but I’ve had a summer from hell and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone else.

in reply to Zephyrbear

I am allowed to voice my thoughts, feelings and distress - I am sorry for your distress. You're welcome to rant as much as you like but it doesn't change how I feel about my life nor do you know much about it. Thank you for your comments they are appreciated and I hope your winter improves.

My Husband was prescribed Carbimazole at the end of 2022. Started taking it, after a few weeks started getting shivers and muscle weakness and barely able to walk. He ended up in hospital and was immediately taken off Carbimazole. I know trying to get re referred is a task these days but could you have a private cunsultation with an endocrinologist as a second opinion. I would hate for you to go through what my husband went through.
