PLS ; primary lateral skcleosis

I was diagnosed in April 2014 with PLS ,a cousin of ALS, but not fatale, a slowly progressive disability illness causing hoarseness, balance problems, weakness, similarly to CMT. Now I'm wondering if I was misdiagnosed. Covid19 was difficult and caused my problems worse causing me to fall and I couldn't get up, so I called 911 and ended up being hospitalized .Now I'm in assisted living trying to get my strength back. I wonder if I was misdiagnosed. How can I find an answer ?

Countrygal this part of healthunlocked deals with thyroid problems. We share our experiences of thyroid and it's treatment. It is unlikely that anyone here will have experience of your conditions.

Yes, this is a thyroid forum. But, I would always advise anyone with any sort of problems to get their thyroid tested.

Thyroid symptoms are non-specific so can be caused by - and mistaken for - a lot of other diseases. And, just because a doctor 'diagnoses' you with something, doesn't always mean you have it. Your symptoms could possibly be thyroid related. So, seems to me the sensible thing to do is get thyroid tested, even if it is just to rule it out. You need:

TSH

FT4

FT3

to start with.

Just out of curiosity, how did your doctor arrive at his diagnosis? Is it a blood test? Or did he just go by symptoms?

PLS is rare, a form of motor neurone disease, its normally diagnosed by blood tests to rule out more common causes, a brain MRI, nerve conduction studies and EMG tests to check muscle function. If you are concerned you need to request those tests from your doctor if you haven't had them.

I would suggest that, if they haven't been tested already, that you have your B12, iron/ferritin, folate and vitamin D tested. Then post your results including reference ranges on the forum and ask for feedback.
