Days for this, that and t'other are everywhere! Not at all convinced this one has anything going for it but, as you know, better safe than sorry. :-)

And what it says is generally positive. With this being so very applicable regarding thyroid: “Elevate the voice of patients!”

17 September is World Patient Safety Day

World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety.

The Day brings together patients, families, caregivers, communities, health workers, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety.

The resolution WHA 72.6 ‘Global action on patient safety’ recognizes patient safety as a global health priority and endorses the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be observed annually on 17 September.

Patient and family engagement is a pivotal strategy to advance safety in healthcare. As users of the healthcare system with first-hand experience of the entire patient journey, the perspectives of patients, families and caregivers are invaluable in improving patient safety. The impact of meaningful patient engagement is remarkable, with studies showing a potential reduction in the burden of harm by up to 15%, saving countless lives and billions of dollars each year. Therefore, patient and family engagement has been embedded as a fundamental principle in the World Health Assembly resolution (WHA72.6) on Global action on patient safety and in the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030.

World Patient Safety Day 2023 is dedicated to the theme “Engaging patients for patient safety” and the slogan “Elevate the voice of patients!”. The day aims to influence stakeholders including patients, families, policy makers, health care leaders, health workers and patient organizations to work collaboratively towards co-designing health care policies and safety interventions that truly reflect the needs and preferences of patients, ultimately enhancing healthcare safety globally.

I kind of like and dislike this. Everyday should be World Patient Safety Day. What’s the point of any health care of not?!

Night.

Thinking about it, I also don’t like the use of the word voice, as it somewhat disablist. But, I did share “night” didn’t I?

Generally, I always like the whole Nothing About Us, Without Us. That’s what I’d like to see too-down. Not just through ‘consulting’, but on equal footing with lived experience. Coming to the thyroid world, uninvited, it feels like it’s a blooming mess and has made less advancement that treating mental health! Grr. I’m not happy today having spent quite a bit of my day dissecting the evidence for NICE Guidelines.

But, I did share “night” didn’t I?

Best and thanks for sharing.

Exactly. The problem isn’t us, it’s them.

I have been overprescribed 3 times. Even my children are teratogenic. No professional that oversees my care will verbalise it. (Others do) overprescrbing has been for many years, above recemend dosage. I believe that until this practice is openly acknowledged so that appropriate care can be put into place and it is recorded for others to see, all we are witnessing is rippling on the waters of change. The core issues are related to a fear of litigation and its tsunami of consequences. We have to change the way we hold someone to account - I think redress is the only road forward that does this. (Immds review, redress)

Given the WHO track record, especially over the last few years, I would say wo do need this day, every day and preferably with strong accountability from all healthcare organisations supposed to ensure patient safety .

I would like to see a mandatory "doctors-ALLOW-patients-to-participate-in-their-safety-day" (just for them to practice this almost nonexistent situation for at least one day per year). I don't know how many times harm could have been prevented if doctors would have listened to a patient. Instead more harm was added by gaslighting, humiliating, threatening etc. And since it is so common, it must be the system that either trains doctors to be that way and/or convinces them that they have godlike knowledge and skills. Patient engagement is, in most cases, not welcome or encouraged. I'm not sure whether this campaign will be taken to heart by the medical profession. Generally I find them not open to anything that does not fit into their box. All in all I think this will be just another greatly ignored day and it will be business as usual. As long as the root of the problem is not addressed, this means absolutely nothing. It is telling, though, that there seems to be an awareness that such a day is needed.
