severe dry throat

I take 200mg of thyroxine daiky and have been under active for years just recently my throat is really dry especially first thing in the morning and my voice at times is horse and crackling. Is this normal for under active thyroid sufferers? I can feel almost like lumpy ness in my throat and I have dry eyes too and a dry nose (it did use to run like a tap)

Welcome to the group. If you could complete your profile it helps members understand your thyroid journey so far and offer recommendations better. Click on your image icon to start.

Do you have a copy of your latest blood results that you can share with us? You are legally entitled to a printed copy of your results, ask at GP reception. In England you can get the NHS app and ask for permission to see your blood results on that by asking at GP’s reception.

Runny nose can often be caused by dairy in your diet. People with Hashimoto's can benefit from going gluten free and some also need to remove dairy from their diet. Do you know if you had positive thyroid antibodies?

Always take Levo on an empty stomach an hour away from food or caffeine containing drinks & other meds. Many people find taking it at bedtime works well for them.

When hypo we get low stomach acid which means we cannot absorb vitamins well from our food, regardless of a great diet. For thyroid hormone to work well we need OPTIMAL levels of vitamins. Have you recently or could you ask your GP to test levels of ferritin, folate, B12 & D3? Private tests are available, see link for companies offering private blood tests & discount codes, some offer a blood draw service at an extra cost. thyroiduk.org/help-and-supp...

There is also a new company offering walk in & mail order blood tests in Crawley, Hove and Reigate areas. No charge for blood draw in clinic. Check to see if there is a blood test company near you. onedaytests.com/products/ul...

Only do private postal testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

It's ideal if you can always get the same brand of levo at every prescription. You can do this by getting GP to write the brand you prefer in the first line of the prescription. Many people find that different brands are not interchangeable.

Having your latest results helps people understand if you might be able to improve your treatment. It would help you if you do have them to post them.

Dry, sore throats can be a symptoms of under replacement.

To get your thyroid hormone working well and help symptoms you need OPTIMAL vitamin levels.

What is your FT3 like ? Sounds like you could be under-medicated. Ideally you want your FT3 at least 75% through the range to be optimal .

I’ll be finding out again in the next few days my bloods should be back in Monday

You could possibly be overmedicated. Getting a full thyroid panel would help discern what’s going on.

Hello, just a thought. I used to wake with a dry sore throat. I discovered that I had silent reflux which is very common with hypo people. When lying down acid from the stomach creeps up your throat. Low acidity in the hypo stomach can paradoxically cause this as the oesophageal sphincter doesn’t close completely as it should be to protect the throat lining.

You could try raising your bed head so that your tilted head upwards at night. You can buy bed raisers on Amazon etc but I used a pile of magazines. In addition or instead you could use Gaviscon when you go to bed. The NHS would suggest omeprazole or similar but I’d stay away from this as it reduces stomach acid &, if hypo, you’re already short of it.

Hoarse & croaky voice often features on hypo symptom lists. You may well need a dose increase too.

snap, I had silent reflux too. It’s not actual reflux more that a tiny spray of stomach juices splatter your larynx, I had a camera down there and it was red raw. Mine has completely gone. Raise FT3 above 30% through range. After blood testing I started 5mcg T3 on private prescription from Roseway labs. I’ve heard US dr explain how low FT3 stops the stomach valves working properly , I also don’t eat after 7 (well sometimes but rarely) don’t drink fizzy drinks with dinner, raise head end of bed slightly, and it’s vanished. Hope that helps 🌱

Have you been tested for Sjogren's yet? I had dry eyes, severe dry mouth/throat and tested positive for it. Biotene dry mouth oral rinse is awesome for the dry mouth. I tried some Act dry mouth lozenges and those didn't help at all. If I have gluten or high FODMAP foods, it causes my Sjogren's to flare up.

I’ve been referred to the ENT specialist at the hospital so awaiting my appointment thanks 😊

Good luck. If you don't get the answers you are looking for, try to cut out certain foods like gluten, dairy, sugars, high FODMAP to see if your symptoms improve. High FODMAP foods for me brings the dryness on fast along with other symptoms. Usually the same day. I refuse to take pharma steroids to treat it as I have 4 autoimmune diseases now. I don't want diabetes added to the list.

By the way, silent reflux with a hoarse voice is something many of us have suffered before diagnosis and it is a symptom. But, as the same symptoms could be due to over medication, a thyroid panel would hopefully be more revealing. But, rest assured, for one reason another it’s a common symptom. Dry eyes is a common symptom of hyper/over medication too.

Good luck and I hope you figure out what is going on soon.

I had graves years ago and an orbital decompression surgery so always get dry eyes but just feel a little bit bad at the moment I think I may have been taking my meds incorrectly all at the same time with my folic acid and vitamin d every day. So I’ve separated it all out which will hopefully help.
