hi, am about to be admitted to hospital fir asthma (1st time was two weeks ago so I really haven’t recovered). Doc is concerned I don’t seem to respond to oral prednisonol steroids - asked if i have issues absorbing meds usually. I Said maybe - low stomach acid with thyroid and am often low in b12 and folate. So came on here for a read and saw greygoose saying asthma can be a symptom of hypothyroidism..? Anything I should know? Any clues on why im suddenly asthmatic and why I’m not benefiting from steroids?
Oh all this is post covid two months ago!
thanks in advance.

Interesting re Hypothyroidism and Asthma mentioned as I have both, I developed asthma out of the blue in my teens and was quite athletic back then. and only a decade ago was diagnosed hypothyroidism ( mid/late 40s) but on thinking about this I question actually if I actually had undiagnosed hypothyroidism much longer than diagnosed, I never considered that.
Given you’ve had a virus I would think this should be investigated further, breathlessness can be all manner of things l think you need to rule some areas out with GP.
So you have asthma but no treatment eg no inhalers?
My asthma is well controlled …I’ve only ever (luckily) had to go on steroids twice, both a reaction to Swine flu jab 2009 & 10 … I no longer have this flu vaccination as it’s in the seasonal jabs, regardless if it’s changed I’m not prepared to risk the problem again … I nearly ended up in hospital and I obviously if got flu worse scenario would end up there, but I feel I’d more likely get reaction every year than get flu every year, had flu in late 80s early 90s and luckily just week in bed but breathing was ok… so I will take that risk.
What do you think? Have you often been breathless / tight chest / or coughing up phlegm at night or after exercise?
Does Ventolin relieve your symptoms?
Don't be discouraged. You can work to build up your immune system and your lungs. The main thing is to be aware of your body and how different things affect it.
I was ‘asthmatic’ ten years ago for a few years til they decided I wasn’t. That three years I got super fit and slim so here’s hoping for that again. No I wouldn’t say I have had typical asthma signs but just generally been under par. Though just had a Feno test of 70 which is pretty severe asthma it seems. Anyway hopefully all good going forward.
I have had asthma for years which became really so bad that I could only walk a couple of steps and stairs were really out. It all disappeared when I started hydrocortisone for adrenal failure caused by pituitary failure. Now I carry my inhalers about but only use the Fostair once a day with just one puff but sometimes even forget it. I had taken Prednisolone before I started the hydrocortisone but it was not giving me much relief despite taking a large dose. Since starting hydrocortisone I am so much better and the asthma has almost disappeared. It might be worth testing your cortisone levels.Heather
I have the same problem. For 20 years or so my health got worse I was diagnosed with COPD for breathlessness every inhaler I was given exacerbated the problem. I stopped using them. A Speech and Language clinician said back then that she thought I was allergic to Levothyroxine, but I was ignore. Fast forward to having a gastroscopy for silent reflux the attending doctor said from my medical records, I had universal allergies and could be allergic to Levothyroxine. So I go back to my GP and he says that the Dorset Formulary will only allow Levothyroxine to be prescribed even said this was supported by an endocrines . So on that basis, I have being reducing my thyroid medication (Levothyroxine) and I am feeling so much better since.
My asthma/ allergy symptoms have definitely gotten worse since covid.
Ventolin is a short lived relief from the constant feeling of irritation in my trachea, The tightness and shortness of breath. Antihistamines seem to help more, though as i'm already taking one i have to double up to get any real effect. I've tried Mondelucast but didnt realise that for some crazy reason, contains aspartame, so couldn't take it after all, so i may have to try steroids, though i am reluctant due to how they effect the thyroid.
