Hashimotos, labyrinthitis and tinnitus

Hi

I had thyroidectomy 41 years ago and been on Levothyroxine since. Had (for the first time ever) Labyrinthitis at end of Jan (confirmed by GP) and took the meds given for a week then stopped as improved enough not to fall over! Then after a slight cold Tinnitus raised its head (just whooshing in my right ear). I understand there can be a connection between thyroid issues and tinnitus. Does anyone have any further help with this issue? Thank you in advance.

Tinnitus can also be a symptom of low B12, it can also be part of the aging process. Have you had your key nutrients tested recently:

Vit D

B12

Folate

Ferritin

These were taken Sept 2022. Never had such a list of bloods taken since I was diagnosed with Hashimotos over 40 yrs ago!

Blood results: calcium 2.40 mol/L; sodium 141 (133-146) potassium 4.6 (3.5-5.3) Urea 4.9 (2.5-7.8) Creatinine 53(45-84); HbAlc 34 (20-41); Vit B12 519 (200-900) ng/L; Ferritin 141 h12-300) ug/L; Folate 7.4 (3.9-19.8); Free T4 20.5 (11-23) TSH 0.02 (0.35-5.00); Vit D 121 (50-150) nmol/L; insulin-like GF-1 16 (4-23); cortisol 290 (166-507) (0600h to 1000h); 74-291 nmol/L (1600h-2000h)

B12 doesn't suggest deficiency so I doubt the tinnitus is due to that.

Do you take any supplements? B12 and folate would benefit from a B Complex to help improve them a bit. Everything else seems OK.

I do take Vit B complex but have ordered a better quality B12 from Solgar to try to help my overall health, including fatigue, though at nearly 74, I do work in the garden, paint and decorate, clean, bake, so I suppose a little tiredness is not surprising at my age! Thank you again.

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Low vitamin levels are extremely common on levothyroxine

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

I had a full range of blood drawn (1st time ever) when referred to Endocrinologist (1st time in 41 yrs). I also had DXA scan as endocrinologist intimated that as my TSH was suppressed (been suppressed for years) I could have bone issues. Scan indicated I had no bone issues! Blood test was carried out in the afternoon after Endo appt!

Blood results: calcium 2.40 mol/L; sodium 141 (133-146) potassium 4.6 (3.5-5.3) Urea 4.9 (2.5-7.8) Creatinine 53(45-84); HbAlc 34 (20-41); Vit B12 519 (200-900) ng/L; Ferritin 141 h12-300) ug/L; Folate 7.4 (3.9-19.8); Free T4 20.5 (11-23) TSH 0.02 (0.35-5.00); Vit D 121 (50-150) nmol/L; insulin-like GF-1 16 (4-23); cortisol 290 (166-507) (0600h to 1000h); 74-291 nmol/L (1600h-2000h)

All the Endo said was all ok! Any help would be greatly received.

How long before test was last dose levothyroxine

TSH would have been higher at 9am

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Cortisol

(166-507) (0600h to 1000h)

No range listed for 1000h-1600h?

Thank you. Personally, I don’t want the GP involved in my thyroid issues as they don’t seem to have a clue, esp where suppressed TSH is concerned and have an apoplectic fit on the phone telling me I’m over prescribed and I am definitely not. Grrrr!

I had an appt with endocrinologist at 11am +blood test around 12 noon. Wasn’t told I’d be taking a blood test so took my thyroxine as per normal at about 8am. Re cortisol, there was nothing for 1000h-1600h in my blood report.

I had FT3 test in the July and it was 3.9 but not given any range.

You work in the garden it’s possible you have developed allergies … try flonase.

I def get hay fever big time when pollen count up. Have had a variety of allergies over the years. Recently developed oral lichen planus. Dentist suggested I get allergy test via GP, which I did though GP rolled her eyes about doing it. Sent me for a blood test and everything came back negative! Yet every year hay fever is a bane of my life and at times I can’t even leave the house as I can’t open my eyes. Work that one out! Over the counter bay fever tabs don’t have any effect so in the past have been prescribed Fexofenadine hydrochloride tabs. GPS seem to have very little understanding about supplements so I keep researching!

Lichen planus, like Hashimoto’s, often improves on strictly gluten free diet

Lottyplum profile image
Lottyplum in reply toSlowDragon

Doing my best to be gluten free but not totally as yet not found any gf bread that doesn’t taste like eating card. I am persevering though, even to the point of making my own gf granola! I take digestive enzymes from ‘Just for a tummies’ as my blood test with a Endo showed low acid (thanks to yourselves), take individual supplements rather than a multi and take on board all the info about keeping supplement levels at optimum levels. What I have learned from the info found here has been invaluable. Some of the stories are heartbreaking. I find it incredible that despite the ignorance from the medical sector, people find such help here that enables us to challenge the myths they still hold that should be flushed down the nearest loo! Big thank you again!

Best bread in my view

Waitrose Brown seeded sliced

Warburtons is ok too

I make my own muesli

Oats need to be from GF section of supermarket (grown in GF field and milled in GF mill)

Waitrose own GF oats are superb

Add your own mix of dried fruits, seeds and chopped nuts

I typically add raisins, figs, dates, apricots, walnuts, almonds, Brazils and seeds….sunflower, pumpkin, flax and chia

Serve with fresh banana and strawberries and oat milk …..delicious

Lottyplum in reply toSlowDragon

Thankyou. Our nearest Waitrose is about 16 miles away so I check out Sainsbury’s. In fact, just bought a Sainsbury’s gf seeded cob to see if that than others I have tried. Re my gf granola, I use quinoa packed with fruit and nuts, add pure maple syrup, mix up in a bowl, spread on a grease proof+cook at 180 deg for about 12-12 mins, let it cool+try not to eat most of it at one sitting!! Thank you again for the support found here.😁

Lottyplum,

I was told the best combo to quell allergies is quertinin, vit C, bromein and nettle. My family successfully used A Garden Of Life combo last year but I've just looked to link to it and it's been discontinued. However, there must be other combos available.

Edit - Just found this one by Nutri ... nutriadvanced.co.uk/vitamin...

and another, although a bit more pricey .. revital.co.uk/products/terr...

Thank you for that info. I started to take Quercitin about 3 years ago during COVID as understood from a US doctor that it’s needed to enable zinc to enter our cells and prevent replication of any viruses. I also use Solgar’s Beta Glucans & Elderberry Immune Complex with my Quercitin. Didn’t even get a cold during the Covid debacle and must admit the allergies were not as severe. I take Vit C every day but never used bromein or nettle. Will check them out. Thank you.

Lottyplum,

There are thyroid hormone receptors located right in the spiral ganglion cells as well as the inner and outer hair cells of cochlea located in the inner ear. Ear and balance issues are very common in people with thyroid issues.

When my thyroid hormones are low I get tinnitus, ear fullness and that feeling of wearing verifocal glasses when I'm not, and start trying to walk up and down steps that aren't there! 😁

I previously posted a very interesting article regarding ear troubles ... .. healthunlocked.com/thyroidu.......
