Can I get my Private Endo prescription moved to my GP and an NHS prescription

I've been with a private Endo for a couple of years, every year I have to pay for my bloods and have an expensive appointment, usually very short! to be able to renew my prescription for the year.

Anyone been successful, in moving that prescription to the NHS, (Thybon 100) and how do I go about trying to achieve this?

Any suggestion most appreciated.

Thank you

Does your Endo also work in the NHS? You could get your GP to refer you to them there.

The rules state that to be prescribed T3 on the NHS the treatment has to be started by an NHS Endo and that GPs should not take over prescribing that has been initiated by a private Endo. Although rarely that has happened presumably as the GP hasn't checked the rules. Always worth asking your GP and then they can refer you anyway.

the in endo is in a different county so I don't know if the GP can refer me there. the NHS endo just said I can't help you!!!

Many Endo's do not believe in adding T3 to levo and think we will be fine on Levo alone. Email info@thyroiduk.org for a list of Endo's who may be able to help. Check who's near you that works in the NHS.

Hi Yoll

I have read other accounts of people saying the Endo they saw privately, once seeing them through the NHS, changed their approach (NOT for the better).

Probably because they have less latitude when working within the NHS. I’m not sure they get as much latitude.

Some people have a smooth transition but others not, so really look into this before you start.

If it were me, but I’m a bit blunt (nah very blunt)😂, I would probably directly ask the Endo if they work in the NHS if he would change the treatment?

But I am blunt 😬👍

Yoll,

I was prescribed T3 by my NHS GP at a private endos request but this was several years ago. My prescription was then withdrawn by the CCG (as it was then) after about a year, then resumed but withdrawn for a second time about six months later.

My GP still does many bloods for private endo and just prescribed testosterone on private endos request. I think the problem is the 'T3' and not the transition from private to NHS in general.

thanks everyone I’ll ask on Monday

But his emails say he does not have access to NHS results. so ???

Not quite as simple as that might seem to imply!

I think, but this would need confirmation, that a consultant who works both for the NHS and privately does not have access to NHS results, even of the same patients, when practising privately.

Obviously, whatever is in his head is another matter. And, at one time, things might have been much less strictly defined and enforced.

bedfordshire

You can get it on the NHS in Bedfordshire. The link to their formulary. It has to be initiated by an NHS endo, and then can be transferred to the GP. So you'd need your GP to refer you to an NHS endo first.

Thank you so much for that the Endo in Bedford refused to prescription it . she did loads of test but not T3 of course and not reverse T3. then just dismissed me!

I then then went private and was prescribe the T3; it hasn't quite changed my life! but I sleep well now and my gut is on the mend. So I wan't to stay on it. I did a cortisol test which showed me I was vey low. So I thinkI need to see someone about that but I'm not very optimiste about that possibility; they seem to specialise in diabetes mainly.

Thanks for the info I'll try again.

I would ask your Endo to write to your GP requesting that GP take over prescribing for your hypothyroidism.

All national guidance says you can trial T3 if levothyroxine not making you well. If you're on Facebook join us on ITT Improve Thyroid Treatment Group. We have template letters and documents giving you all the national guidance and parliamentary statements on T3.

is there any way to interact with this group without facebook? I’m a facebookphobe… 🙃

I'm afraid ITT is still only on Facebook at the moment. We hope to have a website, but we're run by volunteers, some also working fulltime at their day jobs! Time isn't easy!
