I was diagnosed with Graves in oct 2019 and was prescribed Carbimazole to control the symptoms. Just after this I started taking Terbinafine for fungal toenails. Very fortunately for me within a year the Graves went into remission, as did another auto immune issue I was having. Interestingly at the same time my toenail fungal infection was knocked out. I do not know if the killing of nail and other fungi or the Terbinafine or just luck put the immune issues into remission. There are papers being written about fungus (mostly candida types) and auto immune disease. Has anyone else had any anecdotal experiences between fungi and Graves? I am not sure if I have the courage to go get candida and toenail rot to see if it brings my Graves back.

Graves, Thyroids and Fungi
I definitely had some separation of a nail from the nail bed, but I wasn’t too concerned about this (due to sudden onset of TED symptoms around the same time). This nail issue resolved when I started thyroid medication, but my finger nails continue to be brittle/ split easily. I also thought I might have fungal issues in a toe nail, but a podiatrist assured me this was an impact injury (as I used to run a lot).
It’s interesting that many thyroid patients have had/ continue to have nail issues.
I had finger nail lifting too. Clippings were negative for fungal infection. It improved itself and this was some months before being diagnosed hyper.
I now know I'd been hyper many years.
After being treated for some time my toenails started to lift and discolour. Not typically thick & yellow but not right either. Apart from the lifting one toe nail split very low and the bed grew underneath.
I thought I'd have to have it removed but doctor arranged clipping and as negative wasn't offered any treatment.
I ended up taping the half loose bit every day and filing from middle.
In end I brought a fungal treatment solution applied & filed it diligently & it seems much better. I don't know if it was a fungal issue or not perhaps to oil and filing was enough to help the appearance.
Having hyper can also increase blood glucose and this can allow fungal infections to worsen. I was diagnosed type two within year of treatment. This may be part of it too.
I had a very persistent fungal infection in my big toe before being diagnosed with Graves. Could not shift it whatever I tried. The Graves and Hyperthyroidism issue started and was so caught up with that I stopped treating the toe and forgot about it. The toe was fungus free within a couple of months and grew through nicely. No problem since, I did wonder if it was connected
Hi there, hoping you are feeling better now. Can I ask what you did to did to treat the Graves disease
Hi, the Graves and Hyperthyroidism is still very much an ongoing problem. I have been taking Carbimazole ever since being diagnosed in 2021. My TSH, T4 & T3 levels are still fluctuating, battle with endo currently who has decreed they are 'normal'. Another story and problem there
Sorry to hear, my immune system was compromised with poison and some of the treatments I have used are Kinesiology (Muscle Testing Therapist), Homeopathy and Chinese Acupuncture & Massage Therapists and Sound Bath of recent as all of my chakra's became out of balance. I wondered if you haven't tried any of these whether it would be worth finding reputable therapists and give it a go. I have just found out that Fiji Water is great too.
That's very interesting. I have a therapist living next door to me so will have a chat to her and see what she suggests
