abscess in groin

I have got an abscess in my groin. I am on my third lot of antibiotics and have been violently throwing up and have been told that some of my stomach lining has come. You know my problem with eating due to pain and I have just read about gastritis. Does anybody else have this and does it go with thyroid issues

You're in a tough place. Try speaking to your doc and see if they can give you an alternative antibiotic. The traditional route for gastritis is a ppi but they come with their own issues unfortunately. Other options are carafate, h2 blockers Gaviscon advanced ( uk version is preferred by many).

Natural helpers are slippery elm gruel and marshmallow root. Both these herbs and the carafate coat the lining to give it a break from the acid. The downside is that they reduce the absorption of medication, supplements etc. Also, DGL and zinc carnosine are helpful for the lining along with d3 and fish oil which are great for inflammation

If you havent tested for h plyori, I highly encourage it since it can cause gastritis.

DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) should be used with caution because it can raise blood pressure in some people.

The thing that makes ordinary licorice raise BP is the glycerrhizin content. Unfortunately, since DGL is considered to be an "alternative medicine" product there are no official standards as to how much glycerrhizin must be removed before it can be called DGL. Is it 90%, 98%, 99.9%? And does any official body check that DGL really does have low levels of glycerrhizin?

The reason I mention this is that several years ago I took DGL for something (I can't remember what) and my BP, temporarily, shot through the roof.

Its helpful that you've shared your experience and added caution to its usage in regards to BP. It slipped my mind.

There are dgl supplements that state on the bottle the amount of glycrrhizin in each pill. Mine has 1%

Hello Imaaan. Thank you for such a helpful reply.Do you have gastritis and can you eat and drink normally.

I can eat and drink normally but if i eat the wrong foods i get pain. I've been working on my stomach for a few yrs and have been slowly able to reintroduce more foods but even with them I cant eat them all the time or I'll experience a flare up.

I was diagnosed with gastritis through an upper endoscopy around 2015- 2017. Was told that I had had plyori through a biopsy as well. They also noted that I had reflux and a small hiatus hernia

I refused to take ppi and the triple therapy antibiotics because all my stomach issues began in 2014 after taking antibiotics.

From 2014 to 2019 I dealt with weight loss, histamine issues, food intolerances and worst of all excruciating pain almost every night.

Pain got unbearable and finally did triple therapy to eradicate my h plyori which is known to cause gastritis. I'm assuming that I probably had h plyori all my life but it was dormant and non symptomatic like many around the world. The antibiotic that I took in 2014 probably created dysbiosis and the h plyori flourished.

After triple therapy my gut and whole body went haywire. It took some time for things to calm down.

Through the grace of God, around 2019 my pain stopped. Ever since then I have flare ups here and there especially when I'm playing around my new found food intolerances.

I'm currently still working on my dysbiosis.

If I could rewind back I would have taken the triple therapy sooner and also should have taken the ppi for 2-3 weeks to have allowed for my stomach lining to have healed. Or at least should have taken pepcid ac 30 mg which is a step down from a ppi. I feel as though I might have caused some damage to my lining for refusing the ppi all those yrs.

As I had refused ppi and h2 blockers, I relied on slippery elm gruel, zinc carnosine and dgl to ease my symptoms.

You really have been through it. I have suffered all my life with gut issues but it became really bad in 2013 after having a lot of antibiotics for chest infections and other viruses. I was eating normally for me up to then but over the years I have been able to digest any protein without excruciating pain. The antibiotics for this abscess nearly killed me. It was so scary bringing up my stomach lining and when I went to hospital they were talking about an operation. It is so isolating not being able to sit down and have a meal with my family. I suspect I have all the things that you have and like you for all my life. Thank you for sharing your story and like you say it is the Grace of God that gets us through. I am so pleased you are better now, what an ordeal you have been through. You have helped me so much because although this a thyroid forum my lack of nutrition makes me so weak. Thanks again. God Bless🙏

To aid in digestion, my doctor suggested that I try probiotic and digestive enzymes. I was on them for a few yrs. Still using the digestive enzymes but stopped the probiotic because I'm drinking goat kefir and eating sauerkraut. When I was ay my worst I couldn't tolerate sauerkraut.

She also recommended ox bile which helps in digestion and also plays a role in t4 to t3 conversion. I got the lowest dose 150 mg and found it to be helpful but I cant use it for long periods or I will have a flare up. Sometimes I would take half a capsule.

Another supplement that I found helpful is Ancestral supplement beef organs which has pancreas in it.

Vit d3 and fish oil help with inflammation of the stomach lining. Also, look into your iron, b12 etc status.

Sorry to hear that you've been suffering all your life and I hope 2023 brings you better overall health.

Thanks for all your helpful advice. It has been so frightening to know that I was vomiting up my stomach lining. I will look into what you say helped you. You are very kind to share it with me. I am able to eat now what I have been eating. Since 2013 I have only been able to eat jacket potatoes, basmati rice, vegan cheese, vegan margarine, gluten free white bread, vegan yoghurt. The antibiotics were awful. I am on the third one without penicillin because they think it could have been an allergy to penicillin. They have given me an anti sick drug which helps. The abscess is draining only a little. I feel really exhausted after all the sickness and I have a phobia of being sick diagnosed so it has been horrible.Thank you for your reply, you are very kind. You take care of yourself.

Thank you very much for that information. I am struggling with the third antibiotic but only able to take one a day instead of three. I am taking an anti sickness drug and still feeling sick. When this journey started it was low B12 they found and I had injections and felt better then it went high so they stopped but my B12 is almost below normal and I don’t get any from food. On my last blood test they said my blood platelets which Slow Dragon sent me a link about anaemia. I am waiting to see a Haemotologist about it. My body will not take supplements. I am low on Vitamin D as well. I have never felt so ill in my life. You take care.

You may want to discuss with your doctor getting a d3 prescription. I was prescribed 10,000iu taken 5 days a week to bring up my levels.

You're going through a lot and I do hope things improve for you.

The doctor gave me D but I couldn’t take it. Thank you for your reply.

Poor you, sounds horrible. And also sounds like antibiotics aren’t going to solve the problem very quickly. It sounds like you’d benefit from having that abscess drained—has no one suggested that yet?

Meerkat1234 in reply toJazzw

I didn’t know what should be done never has an abscess before. They said if it doesn’t go they would lance it. Thanks for replying.

Jazzw in reply toMeerkat1234

Yes, lancing it would be the same as draining it—a bit like popping a blister.

Honestly, given how much you’re struggling I’d ask if it could be done. Hope it gets sorted soon.

It looks like it will have to be lanced. It is draining a little. I have never been so sick with antibiotics. I am asking to see doctor tomorrow. Thanks for replying. It is all really horrible.

Oh you poor dear. My heart goes out to you. Have you tried taking a turmeric supplement? It is called curcumin and is one of nature’s antibiotic.
