Hair loss regrowth

The inevitable hair loss due to hypo..... in the place of the old hair, the new hair that's coming through is really dry and kind of frazzled. As if really badly damaged with poor hairstyling. Looks really awful. Does it ever get better? My regrowth has been like this for months and months. Still losing hair so eventually I'll end up with really horrible stuff on my entire head. Sometimes I feel like just shaving it all off I'm so fed up. Been on what is hopefully the right dose of levo for about 4 weeks so really hope the loss will come to an end soon P.S. Not lacking in any vits etc

You have only been on 100mcg levothyroxine 4 weeks. It takes many months for all endocrine system to rebalance and settle

Recommend getting FULL thyroid and vitamin testing after 8-10 weeks

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

How do you know that your hairless was due to being hypo? Hair loss is also a symptom of ME and CFS so it could be due to other factors.

I don’t know for sure but hypo seems most plausible

Have you tried wrapping your hair in olive oil and leave in for a time and then wash ... or coconut oil or the many hair oils on the market. At 73 my hair responds well. May be because I used organic olive from my own olive grove !

Yes I use oil all time time

So perhaps you missed the dried frazzled bits you describe above. How can that be if you use oil all the time ?

Nope. That's just how it grows out and it's very strange. That's what I'm asking. Is this normal for regrowth to someties look like this

My hair has been growing back now for nearly a year and it is only now starting to look normal. Hair growth is very slow and even though it can fall out by the hundreds it takes months or years to grow back.. I have been through 2 lots of hair loss and both times I lost over 50% of my hair. I don't think I will ever have the thick curly hair I once had but it looks ok. If you have low ferritin that can make your hair fall out so I would check that if I was you because ferritin needs to be over 80 for hair growth.

Hair loss can also be due to hard/bad quality shower water that is treated with abnormally high levels of chlorine because of old, rusted, dirty pipes...which is literally the case almost worldwide, I am noticing. Combine that with hypothyroidism and you get hair loss at a drastic rate. I reckon I lose about 500 or more hairs a day...and I also have that kind of hair regrowth that looks frizzy and frazzled, like breakage from constant, intense hair drying. No matter how many times I brush my hair, it ends up looking frizzy, messy and unhealthy. I used to have thick, shiny, lustrous curly hair that fell in bouncy ringlets around my face and shoulders and now I have frizzy, limp curly hair that is mostly flattened against my scalp and face.

I actually hate brushing my hair because so much of it comes out and it’s so depressing but it looks even worse when not brushed.

Yes... I am so fed up with my hair I often want to just shave it all off. The horrible frizzy hair that grows back is just nasty

Sometimes, even when all vitamin and mineral levels are optimal, hair still falls out. A malfunctioning thyroid gland also affects other hormones by throwing them out of balance which, in turn, causes hair loss. For example, if estrogen and testosterone are out of balance, that can cause hair loss and other issues.

Hair loss is pretty typical .. not just with HYPOthyroidism .. but Also HYPERthyroidism as I have ( Graves ) I had no body hair , leg hair, eyebrows .. and even lashes .

The hair on my head was falling out in clumps and as brittle as anything just breaking halfway up the hair length .

It added to the misery of dealing with so very many symptoms that overwhelmed me .

... but once I had been treated with Carbimazole and my levels became balanced the Vitamins , Minerals and Nutrients that I took daily and still do ..soon got that all sorted out again 🙏

To be sure ...testing is the best route to see what you are deficient in .. and take it from there . Appeal to your Doctor to help find what you are needing .

I guess what I really want to know is why is the regrowth frazelled and does the hair texture ever return to normal?

Don't know ,but mine does it too. Comes and goes. Haven't noticed a correlation to anything yet ,but i've been wondering lately ,and i know exactly what you mean about the odd frizzy ones.

I have a a fun skin condition too (Pompholyx) which comes and goes.

I'm keeping a better diary to observe myself nowadays , so maybe over time it will be interesting to see if they match up with any blood results .

This makes no sense to me. All my regrowth comes out like nasty, dry wiry things. Scarecrow.
