Taking vitamin D naturally increases calcium in bloodstream

Read links further down this reply on why vitamin K2 mk7 is important

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

ouh.nhs.uk/osteoporosis/use...

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

Once you Improve level, you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Well the vit D increase vs dosage seem broadly consistent with my brother's and dad's but we are all individual. With yourloading doses, it seems like youre probably following a doctor's directions otherwise maybe check Grassroots calculator.

Re covid, you may be interested in the recent video below from Dr J Campbell reviewing 5RCTs confirming much scientific evidence that vit D levels (significantly above yours) impressively protects against (viruses like) covid. Ive mentioned this before on this and other fora. NB vit D is not the only immune-optimiser. youtu.be/x5sc7G4s4CY

Thank you 🤗 On loading dose 25000 one a week for 12 weeks been on them 4 weeks not sure what to aim for though good it's gone from 23-5 x

My family and I aim to maintain at 100-125nmol/l ie optimum, which covers most reports on health (incl covid protection!).Google/use Grassroots Health calculator and regular vit D blood tests to get there eg via doctors or £31 at vitamindtest.org.uk/

What’s the range on Ft4

Just testing TSH and Ft4 is totally inadequate

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

If vitamin D was low, it’s highly likely B12 and folate are also low

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am

This gives highest TSH and most consistent results.

(Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Suggest you get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing once you finish loading vitamin D prescription

Very low Ft4 suggests thyroid is struggling

you need folate, B12 and ferritin levels tested

Test early morning on a Monday or Tuesday

Come back with new post once you get results

You will need ongoing daily vitamin D supplements at a maintenance dose

Trial and Error what dose that is …..aiming for vitamin D at least over 80nmol

Happyxx profile image
Happyxx• in reply toSlowDragon

What would you suggest for maintenance dose maybe 1000 a day? And was does T4 struggling mean would that indicate under active?

Thank you x

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator• in reply toHappyxx

Maintenance dose varies from person to person

Test vitamin D twice year

You’re likely to need higher dose in winter than summer

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator• in reply toHappyxx

Graph showing median TSH in healthy population is 1-1.5

web.archive.org/web/2004060...

At moment your TSH is higher than average

This is the message from pituitary telling thyroid to work harder

Ft4 is storage hormone…..typically is roughly 50% through range

Currently your Ft4 is low at only 17% through range

This could be

A) due to vitamin D deficiency

B) other vitamin deficiencies - lower levels of B12 and folate common with vitamin D deficiency

C) Covid

D) thyroid struggling - usually autoimmune thyroid disease
