Probably A Silly Question, But Will Ask Anyway: Biotin In Shampoo & Long Term Effects.

β€’11 Replies

Hiya. I am currently using a shampoo and conditioner which contains Biotin, which is supposed to help with thin, fragile hair, especially during the menopause. Although it is more likely to be a gimmick, the products does suit me, not in a miraculous way, as I haven't gained a thick bushy mane yet 🀣. I have however, had a thought whether constant use of it may be causing an increased titration of Biotin in my system. What do others think? I know Biotin can affect levels, but an increase caused by absorbing it via a shampoo could be just a bizarre notion, but I do wonder...

Any thoughts would be interesting and helpful, thanks!

MM,

I don't think there will be enough significant biotin amount in shampoo to raise blood levels. However, biotin for improved hair health has a good rep but don't forget iron is the essential. (I mean iron blood levels - not to put iron on your head 🀣).

🀣 Good come back there πŸ˜„. Thanks, I thought it's probably not enough to be a concern, and I am overdue for an iron test, so I need to add that to my to do list.

The issues regarding biotin are not that it affects actual levels of thyroid hormones and TSH. It is that high doses can affect blood tests.

The problem was noticed in people taking really huge doses in multiple sclerosis trials. Then worked back - finding that medium high doses could also affect some blood tests.

But the levels you'd get in ordinary food are not enough to be a problem. And I am quite sure that the amount that could get into your blood from shampoo will be far too low to have any effect on blood tests.

Thank you helvella, appreciate your thoughts, and thanks for replying to my off the wall question πŸ˜„.

There are no silly questions. It's only silly when you have a questions and you don't ask it! I thought it was a great question...I was interested in the answer as I didn't know either!

Hi MapleMoose, I actually would like to know which shampoo & conditioner are you using as I also have very thin hair because of medication I'm taking.

I would appreciate it very much if your allowed to mention it, If not just send me a private message. (Thank you)

Sure, it's just Pantene Grow Strong you can buy at any bigger supermarket. It doesn't work miracles, but I think it helps weak hair from breaking so much.
