Medichecks Thyroid Pannel - Anything I should be aware of? All within normal ranges but experiencing severe fatigue.

Please see attached recent thyroid panel.

I also did a thyroid panel back in July and the TSH came back as above the range at 4.33 mU/L (Range: 0.27 - 4.2). Free T3

( 5.54 pmol/L (Range: 3.1 - 6.8) ), Free Thyroxine ( 17.0 pmol/L (Range: 12 - 22)) and antibodies were all normal.

I also tested positive for chronic active reactivated Epstien Barr Virus. Following these abnormal results I have been eating better and put on monolaurin and l-lystine to help kill off EBV. I haven't noticed any improvement as of yet in terms of my symptoms.

What do you guys think? Does the difference in my results mean there has been an improvement in my thyroid? Do you think my thyroid could be responsible for my fatigue or is it likely to be something else?

Thanks in advance for any comments/advice!!

Your fatigue could be due to hyperthyroidism as your fT3 and fT4 are both high normal. This is inconsistent with your high normal TSH. There is a small possibility that there is assay interference on the TSH result, you could check this by getting your doctor to run a different TSH assay. Alternatively, it's possible you have a minor pituitary problem that is secreting too much TSH, this would need to be investigated by an endocrinologist.

Check your resting pulse and report back. Also, hold your hands out in front of you and look for a fine tremor in your fingers. Do you tend to sweat?

Thank you for such a thorough response! You've raised some interesting points :)

Resting pulse is 77. Yes my fingers have a fine tremor. I do sweat, but not an excessive amount. Does that tell you anything?

Yes, it further suggests hyperthyroidism, you should be referred to an endocrinologist and given anti-thyroid medication in the meantime.

Ok, thanks for your advice. I will see if I can get a private referral to see one.

Thanks for all your help 😁

I assume you are not taking any supplements that might affect thyroid hormones.

Not that I'm aware of. I do take vitamin D and Coq10 but I stopped that a week prior to testing. Otherwise I just take monolaurin and l-lystine.

This is probably contributing to your fatigue. We're all different but I'm usually my best at least 75% through the range

Very low ferratin

Thanks for your comment! I will look into some iron supplements incase that helps!!

If you're not a vegan/vegetarian, liver is a great source plus heme iron. The only issue with heme iron is that it normally comes in 11mg and you need a lot more to raise your levels. Also, doing an iron panel would be beneficial to see what's going on in your body. Also you should investigate on why you have such low ferratin if you're not a vegan/vegetarian

Wishing you all the best.

I'm not vegan or vegetarian, so I will look into getting an iron panel done. Can you recommend an iron panel to go for? A quick search brings up loads of results and I'm not sure what results would be beneficial.

Thanks so much again!

We shouldn't supplement iron based on just a low ferritin result. An iron panel is needed consisting of

Serum iron

Saturation percentage

Total Iron Binding Capacity

Ferritin

If serum iron and saturation are already good then taking iron supplements will take them too high and too much iron is as bad as too little.

Medichecks do an iron panel if your GP wont do one - called Home Iron Test, currently on offer at £39 and can be done by fingerprick.

For me getting my vit D level to 125 has helped with my overall well-being. Currently working on ferritin with eating iron rich foods and vitamin C. My B12 was not great so have been taking subligual B12.. each day i feel closer to my former self. The chronic fatigue is much betterI am doing a medichecks test next week so i am hoping for improvements all around.

Good luck you will get there 😁
