At last - comparison of LT4 v DTE(NDT) treatment of hypothyroidism

This is a poster from the recent ATA conference (no 125). I can't get the actual poster but what it says is:

A recent multicenter, double-blind randomized clinical trial (presented @AmThyroidAssn meeting) involved 284 patients and compared therapy with LT4 vs desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) for up to 48 weeks. Overall safety and adverse events were similar in both groups.

There are also similar large trials being conducted in the Netherlands and the UK.

Great news! I hope they're continuing the study for longer than 48 weeks, because we can imagine the doubters questioning the validity of a study of that duration. But another tick in the box 👍

Diogenes, Is there any clue as to how far into these trials they are? Hopefully not long to wait for the outcomes?

No news as such: they will need to analyse the data at the end of the trials to publish,

Encouraging news. I, like many on here I'm sure would be happy to volunteer to trial NDT. Wonder how they sourced UK candidates?

Totally agree, I’ve never seen one requesting vols but perhaps it will change now if more research is undertaken. Let’s hope so.

I found the abstracts on this link :

The one that diogenes has referred to can be found by searching on that page for "HIGHLIGHTED POSTER 125"

While searching for info on this I also found these links which may be of interest :

It will be interesting to see who qualifies as a suitable subject, what parameters need to be met and how effectiveness of dose is measured.

It seems to me we are all very different as to our ability to convert T4 into T3 and our own goal posts tend move with age etc.

Yes, I still worry about the design of the trials. Insofar as if adequate dosing is, on both the T4 and the NDT arms defined by TSH in the reference range as the determination factor for proper dosing.

Exactly - if having a TSH in range is a ' given ' there is no point - and it's just another contrived stitch up and a salary for certain people - but I couldn't possible say or comment further !!
