itchy skin and underactive thyroid
hey, sorry to hear about your itches, it’s so irritating (in every sense). Lots of things trigger me to itch. (Am a sensitive flower 🌸) for me it can be the heating coming on making me dry. Washing powder not rinsed properly on clothes, fabric conditioner is 100% no. Some shower gels dry me out. Can’t use many fragranced creams. I’ve discovered Cetraben ointment and cream work well and don’t react. When I do get itchy I find loratadine hayfever tablets help soothe. Hope you get some respite 🦋💚🦋
Hi Lolaknit, I just had a quick search of your previous posts to see what your thyroid levels are like, but note that you haven’t posted for quite a while, so it maybe worth sharing your most recent levels with members. Having optimal ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D supports thyroid health, so do check these too.
I’ve had skin itches when both over and under medicated thyroid wise, so it could be related. However, as Regenallotment has noted, there’s a myriad of other triggers.
Do antihistamines help relieve the itch?
Regarding skin lotions, I’m a fan of aromatherapy and have benefitted from adding a couple of drops of essential oil to almond oil and applying to the affected area:

Skin products are very much individual choice, but whatever you choose make sure it’s ok for sensitive skin.

My itchy arms are quite painful too and linked to my B12 needs ....
B12 supports the myelin sheath surrounding nerves - hence helping my painful itching. Thanks for your info re your research - very useful. Fits my stmptoms too as I have spinal issues ...
It was once so bad a few years back, I put elastic bandages in the freezer during the day and bound my arms at night - very alluring !! I also used a product called Froicalm - German I think - and primarily calamine. I was living in Crete at the time so sunshine too. Once I started B12 injections it seemed under control.
I think it's agreed that skin disorders originate in the gut, usually leaky gut. It could be a pathogen or even a parasite or an imbalance in the microbiome. Topical creams can only do so much. Functional doctors can investigate with some functional testing. There are herbals that may help like oregano oil, olive leaf and others. But if digestion is not working efficiently, that would be the place to start in my opinion.
I had severe itch on arms, slept with freezer packs. I did B-12 injections and now take only supplements . Itch is gone.
On my arms somewhat but at my age it is mostly dry skin.....but.....I remember the frustration with the docs..........I had an itch area on my side and they just said "it's nothing". Well it itched so bad I would scratch it off til it bled (two years??) After two docs sluffing me off, I went to a dermatologist and did some research on spiders.....it felt like some spider had left his stinger in.....well, the dermo doc just cut it out and lab test on the tissue confirmed my idea. Doctors really like to undersand only their specialty.................my semi localalized problem might not fit here, but if it seems like a bug or spider bite, don't discount it. The itch was absolutely horrible....................marceen in the us.............problem solved.
