hello

Have any of you lovely people tried diets for hormone, anti inflammatory, fat busting ? I have an appointment with an endocrinologist in a few weeks time as I am struggling to get my thyroid levels in range? I’m menopausal and had an operation recently so would like to feel a bit better so I started reading about diet but it’s so confusing good review on some but horrendous ones on others so my question is have any of you had any success with any. Thank you in advance xx

Diet won't resolve hypothyroidism per se but it could/ might help some symptoms or dietary deficiences eg eating black pudding to boost iron level which is important to support thyroid function.

Replacement hormone is the treatment for hypothyroidism

It sounds as if you would benefit from a full thyroid test which GPs don't do

TSH, FT4, FT3, vit D, vit B12, folate, ferritin and antibodies TPO and Tg

To achieve this many of us test privately, it's the best way to fully evaluate thyroid function

thyroiduk.org/help-and-supp...

This will also show if you are adequately converting T4 to T3. T3 is essential to every cell in the body and must be available in an adequate and constant supply.

High FT4 with low FT3 indicates poor T4 to T3 conversion

Low T3 = health problems

You mention weight gain this can be a symptom of undermedication.

I suspect that your FT3 is low ....testing would confirm

Poor health/ operations can also cause T3 to drop.

You could start by asking your GP to test FT4 and FT3 or failing that see an endocrinologist who may test

Personally I would by-pass all that and just do the private test if possible....that would point the way forward with no delays/ waiting times etc

I was on 150mcg levo for about 20 years and felt increasingly worse....until I started to investigate by myself.

It's madness but that's life with hypothyroidism....if you don't respond well to levo mono

Diet alone won't resolve thyroid weight gain.

Post any results you have and members will advise.

we always recommend getting FULL thyroid and vitamin testing BEFORE any consultation

After an operation it’s possible B12 is especially low

Has GP tested oestrogen and progesterone levels

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change or brand change in levothyroxine

how much levothyroxine are you currently taking

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Do you have autoimmune thyroid disease?

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Hi Banff,

Is it fat you are trying to shift or is it fluid in the form of mucin?

youtu.be/oI9yurd3jQk

I looked back at your previous post, you sound very much like me extra weight coming from nowhere? I'm on HRT too and the estrogen (balanced with progesterone) seems to slightly lessen the effectiveness of T4, are you on testosterone too as that is a game changer 🤗 It's a balancing act.

Mine (mucin) literally disappeared over a couple of weeks when I got the right T3/T4 combo and thanks to this lovely lot my vit's, min's and iron are back on track.

If you put your full test result (and ranges) on, the very knowledgeable, experienced folk on here will point you in the right direction

thank you I’ll get my results from the GP. I’m not on testosterone I’ve not been offered it! Did your GP give you it? Or menopause doctor ? I’m nervous about seeing an endocrinologist x

They don't think to offer... that's the crazy thing they give you 2 out of 3!?

I only found out as I went to a Menopause Clinic 18 months ago

GP's are now catching on but you would need to request they test your levels, they now supply mine.

You need to be well informed to get the best out of your Dr 😉

I've got my first Endo appointment coming up too.... don't be nervous, read as much as you can here, and you will be well informed to ask the right questions. If they turn out to be a total waste of time everyone on here will guide you what to do next 🤗 🤗

They have all told me not to expect much from an Endo unless you really strike lucky so I went ahead and trialled T3 over the last 3 months.... life changing!

Get your results up and the information and advice will come to you 🤗

Research the Ray Peat diet :)

For diet experience, I started on Izabella Wentz root cause in June, now eat a mostly auto immune/paleo type diet. Gave up gluten and dairy, sulphites, processed sugar and soy. Over the same timescale I’ve had an increase in Levo plus improved my Vit D and Ferratin levels. I’ve steadily lost 6kg between August and end Oct. Had a cold with flu/covid jab and life stress recently and weight loss halted completely but I’m hopeful it’ll continue now I’m better. I too am convinced it’s mucin I’m losing too. Can almost pinch skin on my calves … it’s happening! 🦋💚🦋
