A photograph of the people chosen to represent the diverse audience Our Future Health is looking to recruit
Our Future Health will be the UK’s largest ever health research programme, bringing people together to develop new ways to prevent, detect and treat diseases.
Helping future generations live in good health for longer
Today, millions of people spend many years of their life in poor health. And too often, we treat diseases only when patients start showing symptoms.
Our goal is to transform the prevention, detection and treatment of conditions such as dementia, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
So future generations can live in good health for longer.
World-leading research to improve health
Our Future Health will collect information from millions of volunteers right across the UK to create one of the most detailed pictures we’ve ever had of people’s health.
Researchers will be able to use this information to discover more effective ways to prevent, detect and treat diseases.
I received the invite a couple of days ago .The exercise seems to be mainly targeted at involving non white communities and lower income communities. Blood tests and dna and genetic data are taken . At 77 and not from those communities I am not sure I wish to be included .
Looks to me that they are simply trying to avoiding exclusion - not that they are targetted at non white and lower income. They are also trying to make sure their sample is geographically distributed including the devolved administrations.
Too many data collection exercises have failed to ensure they cover most identifiable groupings. And that is especially easy to do if they don't put in extra effort.
I've signed up and booked in for a blood test on Wednesday. It looks really interesting and finally they are looking at ways of doing preventative medicine.
I’ve done it but there was absolutely nothing about thyroid disorder in any of the questions, hormone replacement therapy seem to mean HRT not thyroxine. It seems to have a very limited scope. It looked as if my family are all paragons of health and did not touch on any of the multiplicity of cancers and auto immune disorders we suffer from. I am quite disappointed and I’m not trekking to London at my own expense to do a blood test for them. I hope they set up something within easy reach.
They simply aren’t asking the questions I feel are of relevance to my health issues and tens of thousands of others. It’s all diabetes, heart disease and breast cancer etc things that akready get a huge amount of attention, funding etc I wish they had been clearer that what they are looking at disease wise is extremely limited. I can’t see anything of value about thyroid disorder coming out of this because the questions are not being asked in the first place. Lots for diabetes…..we really are the poor endocrine close cousins, conveniently airbrushed out, despite us being very many and it having a huge impact in all sorts of ways and on many aspects of health not to mention all the suffering we put up with because of ignorance and arrogance. Expect more of the same I’m afraid….
Perhaps I had unrealistic expectations that have now been ‘managed’
don’t know why thyroid would not be included as it can affect every organ in your body if it’s not working right I know from experience after being switched from MP to Teva I had multiple thyroid abnormalities don’t know if the Teva had been stock piled to long as the GP said they are bulk buying or I wasn’t absorbing but I was not getting any medication it affected my vascular and lymphatic system and everything else ended up having heart attack never got to see a endocrinologist or cardiologist till after I had the heart attack.
Thanks for posting helvella I’ve signed up & booked bloods. These sort of big data health projects I’m sure will advance knowledge and hopefully recognition/treatment or preventative advice. I also take part in the Zoe trials for the same reason
I've signed up. But the nearest place to give a blood sample is London, a good 100 miles from me... and I'm not prepared to do that! Waiting for a nearer one to come up.
