A few days ago, I 'came down with a cold'. But, as happens very often, the cold never manifested very much, I just feel a bit chesty and catarrhal, the main thing is that I'm wiped out. I've been feeling really weak and floppy and having to sleep all afternoon, for days.
Is it a cold AND a thyroid crash, and/or adrenal crisis? Whatever it is, it happened a lot in my 30s and 40s, before I got diagnosed as hypothyroid. One reason that took so long to happen was that GPs presumably ignored my raised TSH because it was still ‘within range’, and told me that I had, variously: recurrent labyrinthitis, 'an unknown virus', or stress, as the cause of these episodes.
I've been taking NDT (Thiroyd brand) for about 10 or 12 years now, and these collapses more or less stopped, or at least became very rare. However, Thiroyd has gone off the market, and prices of other brands have gone up, and I thought it was time I gave Levo a proper try. So at the end of May, I switched: instead of 1.5 grains of Thiroyd NDT per day, I started taking 50mcg Levothyroxine plus half a grain of Thiroyd. (I knew 50mcgs was going to be too little)…
In early August I decided to stop taking the NDT, for the sake of my GP-directed blood tests. So for 2 months I’ve been on 50mcg of Levo only. I think I’ve become badly under-medicated.
This week I went back to the GP and we raised the dose to 100mcgs, which I’ve now been on for a few days.
Given how awful I’m feeling, I’m considering adding a half grain of NDT to that as well, even though I know the GP won’t like it, as she wants to ‘see what’s going on’. Personally I’d be happy to dose according to results, and never mind the TSH test.
I may also be low in ferritin, as I’ve had problems with that before - e.g it got down to 18, on a scale of 13 - 200, at one point. But this year, I’d had a good high reading, over 90 I think, so I stopped taking the Spatone - and kind of forgot about it. So I may be back at the super-low level again. I’ve started taking a couple of Spatone sachets per day.
Speaking of the blood test, I don’t think I ever did one this year, not since January. I thought I had; but the GP couldn’t see a trace of it. My memory is awful, so the one I thought I’d done recently is probably the one I did in January. I’m due to do a new one after 8 weeks on the higher dose of Levo. Though I’m wondering if I should try to do one ASAP, so I can ‘see what’s going on’ while I’m at this low ebb.
I’m wondering if it’s possible that a cold virus can cause a thyroid crash. (Strange theory, but who knows?) Or that these ‘colds’ aren’t colds at all, just symptoms of a hypo crisis. The hypo crisis, assuming that’s what it is, is so indistinguishable from ‘coming down with something’ - in terms of feeling weak, floppy, dizzy, exhausted, and needing to lie down and sleep - that I can’t really tell them apart, unless there’s a lot of catarrh, sore throat, and coughing.
Who else has these periods of ‘might or might not be a virus’ collapse?
Any thoughts of what I should do right now in terms of blood tests, and supplementing my Levo with NDT?
