I have in the last two months become very unwell with over active thyroid symptoms ie heart palpitations fast heart rate (ended up in A&E a few times due to this) dizziness tremors insomnia loss of weight, pain in chest and digestive issues ect I also have a swollen thyroid gland and pain in the neck
This all came on very suddenly (4 weeks after recovering from covid)
Now my blood tests results show “normal” TSH levels but over the range for T4 levels (23.6 range is 12-22) and elevated platelets has anyone else had this?
im currently waiting for endocrinologist and a scan on my thyroid. I am taking 80-100mg of propranolol a day which has helped ease some symptoms
GP reckons it is thyroiditis
Or could this be the start of over active thyroid?
Many thanks 🙏

Covid does seem to upset thyroid in many people….so it could just be temporary and improve on its own
Autoimmune HYPOthyroid disease (also called Hashimoto’s) frequently starts with transient hyperthyroid results and symptoms before becoming increasingly hypothyroid
Alternatively could be hyperthyroid, autoimmune thyroid disease (called Graves’ disease)
You need thyroid antibodies tested
TPO and TG antibodies for Hashimoto’s (can also be present with Graves’ disease)
TSI or Trab antibodies tested for Graves’ disease
Also need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested.
Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 too
Low vitamin levels are extremely common with Hashimoto’s or Graves
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
Request GP test thyroid antibodies and vitamin levels now

There’s been lots of reports of covid triggering thyroid issues.
If it has triggered thyroiditis this it can cause high & low fluctuations.
Your endocrinologist will need to test thyroid antibody as this can help show if & which autoimmune thyroid condition may be affecting your.
Do you know if you are having an ultrasound scan or uptake scan?
Propranolol can help ease symtoms but won’t treat source of issue. When you want to stop propranolol reduce it slowly. Not abruptly.
Once the cause of your hyper Is established and it can be judged if transient (Hashimoto’s or autoimmune thyroiditis) or continuous hyper (Graves). If you have hyper you can be started on carbimazole - which reduces how much new hormone can be produced.
Recommend you get a hold of any blood test results & any scan reports. Share on here & we can explain further. Online access ideal if available or printed copies must have reference ranges.
Doctors often don’t complete a full thyroid assessment and people have been started on wrong treatment based on incomplete information. eg assumed they have Graves & started on carbimazole but levels drop quickly & it is later confirmed they have transient hyper & ultimately become under active.
Tests you are looking for:
TSH. Thyroid stimulating Hormone. From Pituitary to signal thyroid can be unreliable.
TPO & TG “autoimmune marker” - appears with BOTH Hashimoto’s & Graves. Hashis causes transient hyper prior to under active. Graves continuous Hyper. GP can arrange test.
My bloods come back as hi proactive thyroid so my doc put me on Carbimazole straight away . Also propanolol was prescribed. Within 12 wks everything settled.. That was 3 years ago. I have my bloods done every 3 months to see my thyroid levels … I have done some research and the menapause can interact with the thyroid so I also went on HRT patches. My doc said I will be weaned off Carbimazole by June 2023 but will still be monitored..
hope this helps …. Horrible condition this is !!! Propanolol did stop my shaking and absolutely calmed my heart down xx
oh bless you what a horrible wait. You definitely need medication to bring your thyroid levels down .. when I first fell Unwell before I new it was thyroid problems, my symptoms were mad ! I lost a stone on weight , I was frightened to drive, I shook bad, and was so tired… and my heart was racing all the time … hopefully you will get sorted soon Marie xx
