Abbreviations and ‘thyroid speak’!

Abbreviations!

I’m new to this site and finding the abbreviations being used (which everyone else seems to understand) quite confusing! Could really do with some simple explanations that explain the abbreviations being used! Just read a dozen comments and was confused.com by the end!!😳

I frequently post links to my vade mecum document which might help.

helvella - Vade Mecum for Thyroid

The term vade mecum means:

1. A referential book such as a handbook or manual.

2. A useful object, constantly carried on one’s person.

Please don't get put off by the number of pages!

Nor by the fact it is targeted at people interested in thyroid issues. Much of its contents could be of use to many involved in health issues. Things like abbreviations, lists, general reference information, an Appendix of links to many useful websites.

And do keep up to date. I edit it frequently- sometimes trivially, sometimes extensively. If your copy is more than a few weeks old, please download it again.

In particular, it is not intended that you sit and read the document. Just that you download it and know you can look things up.

If there is anything you'd like me to add, let me know.

What abbreviations in particular? Mostly blood results are discussed and might mention FT4 or FT3 which medical terms used for the different types of hormone in our blood.

Think it’s more about the ‘jargon’ within the thyroid community. T4, T3, TSH I’m familiar with as part of my regular annual blood test. All been ok for past 40 yrs (yes 40!) until new gp surgery reduced my Levothyroxine +all hell broke out in my body and suppressed TSH causes mayhem when a GP picks up my blood results. I’m 73 for heavens sake and would like my life back so understanding the messages is vital so I can deal with GPS who don’t seem to understand Hashimotos in particular - and that’s if they actually look at my notes to understand I’m not just suffering under active thyroid (removed 40 yrs ago) but am dealing with autoimmune issues! Last year one GP rang endocrinologist to ask does he go by symptoms or numbers - was told numbers!! I went down a black hole of under medication+all the symptoms that brings! Don’t feel I can trust doctors!

I think you're in good company here in not trusting doctors. Unfortunately by far the majority of doctors go by numbers almost exclusively and disregard symptoms. We all know this is wrong, and there are people working tirelessly in the background to change it but this is where we are sadly.

Perhaps if you don't understand something then reply asking about whatever it was? People are helpful around here. 🙂
