Feel better with Beechams

Maya_83 profile image

Hi.

Im trying to understand why i feel loads better after Beechams?

I regularly feel unwell. Just switched to thyroid-s recently and found no improvements.

Im also on LDN, initially felt better but now back to feeling awful.

However whenever i take beechams i feel so much better. I can get through the day without burning out, headaches or annoyed.

I don't want to get use to them but do find myself poping them especially if i have a long day ahead.

Anyone else feel the same?

What are Beechams?

The above is a product called "Beechams Powders". The company also sells cold and flu treatments, that I think are similar to Lemsip.

yeah thats the one but i take the capsule form which i find works best.

Ah right, they contain aspirin which has been used as a medicine for all sorts of things for many decades! Perhaps you have some sort of low level inflammation. How many times a day do you take them?

Maya_83 profile image
Maya_83 in reply to StitchFairy

Hi,

I definitely know i have inflammation as my CRP results are always on the high end of the range. Do you think that moght be the reason?

I didn't know it contains aspirin?

Normally 2 first thing in the morning ir 2 before bed.

Can this get addictive? Il also take it if i have a long day ahead.

I didn't know it contains aspirin?

They make different products, exactly which one are you taking?

The powders appear to contain aspirin and caffeine, the capsules seem to contain paracetamol, phenylephrine and some also contain guaifenesin

They don't list all those ingredients on the link provided so I assumed that they didn't contain them.

The front of the boxes clearly state what's in them.

The person making the post has the powders. I wouldn't (personally) take any of these for a multitude of reasons thyroid, asthma and stomach problems.

Hi,

I take the capsule form. Never taken the powder ones so dont know if it will have the same effect.

I thought you were the OP as you'd responded to my post, I didn't go back to the top of the thread to check.

Maya_83 which one are you taking, all Beechams products are shown in my post just above.

In that case I'd check out the patient information leaflet that comes when this product is prescribed, check both tabs - SmPC and Patient Leaflet

medicines.org.uk/emc/produc...

It does say

Do not take continuously for more than 5 days without medical advice.

People take daily low dose aspirin as a preventive measure for heart conditions. The caffeine could be more addictive.

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply to BeePurple

My late father in law was prescribed with daily low dose aspirin. He was hospitalised with gastrointestinal bleeding and couldn't continue with it.

BeePurple profile image
BeePurple in reply to SeasideSusie

Yes, my Mum and I struggle with it that way so don't take it. On my first aid course the leader said it is still beneficial to carry it though because despite these problems it would still be the best thing to take if you are having a heart attack.

The Beechams Powders Patient Information Leaflet expressly states:

Do not use for more than 10 days for pain relief (or more than 3 days for fever).

medicines.org.uk/emc/files/...

(If that is the product being taken.)

And that is at least partly due to the bleeding issues.

phenylephrine can give you a boost, a colleague years ago described it as ‘legal speed’ I’ve no idea if that’s true, I’m not too knowledgeable on class A drugs 😆. I doubt long term use is advised. These would give me palpitations and anxiety, like being overmedicated. 🦋💚🦋

BeePurple profile image
BeePurple in reply to Regenallotment

This one doesn't contain that ingredient. The cold remedy one does. It does advise not taking levothyroxine with any of these types of products like Beachams cold and flu or Lemsip due to palpitations.

Its probably the caffeine! I sometimes treat myself to a coke for the same reason!

I suspect like most things if you take it just once or twice a week to perk you up it would be ok but probably best not to take it daily. It is so nice when you find something that makes you feel better instead of worse. I can totally understand why you would want to take it regularly but I think you should be careful with it 😊

Maya_83 profile image
Maya_83 in reply to Bookworm63

hi, yes definitely. I try to limit it as much as i can.

Don't take it eveyday. Just so desperate to feel well. X

Have you got any recent blood results Maya_83 ? You may need to alter your med intake. Wouldn't recommend taking the Beechams for any prolonged period. Paracetamol affects your liver and the Guaifenesin shouldn't be taken for extended periods either -drugs.com/guaifenesin.html# . Having said that, guaifenesin has been used to alleviate fibromyalgia symptoms, which are very similar to hypo symptoms so quite possibly this is why you are better - verywellhealth.com/the-guai...

I ve noticed that I m taking more paracetemol these days (not excessive, just more than usual). I find that even if i take it for something like a headache, it helps with other 'low level' symptoms which I haven't even acknowledged to myself until they ve gone. (general aches, itching etc). That in turn helps me sleep, and then feel better over all.
