T3 Options

Hello all,

I am currently taking 100/125mg levo (alternate days) 2x5mg lio.

I am feeling worse than before I introduced lio and I was just taking 125mg levo . I think I would like to try 125mg levo and 2.5mg x2 lio.

I cant get 5mg tablets on the NHS to spilt because they are too expensive, I am wondering if anyone else has been in this position and what other options there are.

Thanks

Lilac I get 5mcg tablets on the NHS. My GP insisted that I got 5mcg tablets as my prescribed dose was 2 x 5mcg daily. He said that splitting a 10mcg tablet would not give a standard prescribed dose.

Are you currently prescribed 20mcg tablets

Prices of different tablets

Roma capsules are cheapest….but can’t be split

I currently get 5mg capsules, they are Roma but can't be spilt. I'm wondering if it's even worth it for such a tiny dose.

Hi Lilacsocks

I am having trouble with getting my T4/T3 combination right too but convinced the 'answer' is there somewhere.

On your Roma information leaflet, section 3, "How to take Liothyronine Sodium Capsules" it says (para 3):

"If you have difficulty swallowing a whole capsule, empty the contents of the capsule into a minimum of 20ml of water. Stir and drink the whole liquid to ensure you take the full dose. It is possible to do this with Liothyronine because this substance is soluble in water."

Could you try the above and drink half of the solution for one 2.5mcg dose and half for the other?

I am trying to change from UniPharma Lio (which I bought in Greece) to Roma (which I have just obtained via the NHS) and I have found the Roma much stronger so I am not feeling so good now and being indecisive about how to proceed- so gone back to UniPharma while I try to work it all out. Reducing to 2.5mcg is probably a good move for you as it is new to you and you can start with a small amount and then very gradually build up to see if it works better that way.

Good luck!

Thanks for this.I originally had morningside in 10mg which I halved and then the pharmacy switched me. I definitely found it stronger and felt worse.

Is it possible to pay for it yourself to get the more expensive option?

Lilacsocks, 'Is it possible to pay for it yourself to get the more expensive option?'

This would be something to discuss this with whomever currently prescribes your T3. In order to pay for it yourself, you would need a private prescription rather than an NHS prescription.

Can a GP do this?

In theory yes. If your GP is currently prescribing on NHS, he/she could write you private prescriptions instead. But there's absolutely no obligation for he/she to do so.
