Mucin weight gain levothyroxine

I saw many posts of people gaining weight when they start thyroid medication. I read about high levels of mucin in the body of people with hypothyroidism and someone on the forum said that’s why we feel bloated and have excess weight. I read that mucin levels in the body rise when the body feels it needs protection. Could it be that our bodies see the thyroid medication as a hostile intruder that we need protection from? It sounds logic to me since our body always strives for balance and healing. I’d love to hear thoughts on this..

No. It is because the dose is too low. The thyroid has been struggling to produce hormones. When the body then gets the additional hormones from levo, TSH will drop and the struggling thyroid will reduce its output. However the starting dose is not enough to make up for the reduction in thyroid output so folks can end up more hypo than before. It was being undermedicated for 5 years that caused my mucin and not the levo.

Oh thanks, that makes a lot sense. Are you feeling better now?

It is a long story. Having been ill and kept undermedicated for so long my body adapted and changed to survive on fewer hormones. Now I have more hormones it will take time to adapt and change again so patience is key.

Oh ok. I understand. I also have been undiagnosed for years. But i was managing pretty ok, besides lots of anxiety. If you have any updates in the future and you are willing to share , i would love to hear it. Wishing you a good recovery.
