Thyroid Treatmet: Hi Everyone. Re thyroid... - Thyroid UK
Thyroid Treatmet
Kaz, there are a lot of folks on here on ndt either bovine NDT or porcine NDT.NDT is not licensed for use in the UK so it is extremely rare to get it on the NHS. Some users get it through private prescription while others import it from abroad and self treat.
If anyone is considering self medicating then they need to be knowledgeable about how the thyroid works and how to go about getting supplies and regular blood tests.
If you post some more info about yourself and thyroid blood results then folks are more likely to respond.
Hi. Thank for your reply. I am aware its not licensed in UK. I'm looking for general feedback. Its a very expensive option but I'm not happy with the idea of taking what is generally prescibed in the UK as it only treats part of the problem. I have been advised by a family self medicator that NDT has a more balanced approach for her but appreciate we all can react differently to varous meds. Many thanks for taking the trouble to respind. Kind regards Kaz
Whilst NDT is very good for a lot of people, it doesn't suit everyone. It didn't suit me, it made me very ill. It's worth trying, if you can, of course. But be aware that it's not some miracle product that makes everyone fit and well. Me, I'm better on synthetic T3 only.
Broadly, there are two groups of animal-derived products.
First, prescription-medicines, which are manufactured to known and declared potency of thyroid hormone.
Second, other products which make no potency claims - often called glandulars. Companies in that market sometimes say they never even check thyroid hormone content.
Some are porcine (from pigs), others are bovine (from cattle).
My medicines document has sections on both such product groups:
helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines
I have created, and try to maintain, a document containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world.

I have had a very positive experience with Pig thyroid NDT. I had my thyroid removed back in 2015 and after being put onto the usual Levo was very ill. After a few months I bought Thyroid s and have been on it ever since. My blood test results are perfect and I feel really well on it. Some people don't get on with it you can only try and see. It took me nearly a yearto get the dosage correct for me. I have no gut problems or anything else wrong.
Just for info, some companies sell bovine (cow thyroid) NDT.
I'm one of those people who never got on with NDT, but I know there are a lot of people who love it.
Hi. Thanks for your response. Its really helpful 😊👍
