Being hypo can cause high blood pressure, or low blood pressure. Taking levo, when you're on the right dose, should normalise it. But, that raises two questions: a) what is a 'normal' blood pressure, and b) what is the right dose? :)

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

What were thyroid results BEFORE starting on levothyroxine

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose increase or brand change in levothyroxine

ALWAYS test thyroid levels early morning, ideally before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Essential to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 levels too

Plus thyroid antibodies tested at least once

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, also called Hashimoto’s, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

I took levothyroxine for a year when I was being treated with block and replace when I had Graves’ disease. I was already taking lisinopril for high blood pressure but my BP was well controlled (still is) and the levo didn’t make any difference.

Being on not enough levothyroxine can certainly cause it, as can not having enough T3 in your system.

It’s not the Levo per se—it’s your hypothyroidism causing it, particularly if you’re undermedicated.

This is also my experience. I have decided to stop taking BP readings until I think my Levo is at the right dose (based on other symptoms) and will then see if my BP has normalised. The raised BP was freaking me out too much, therefore immediately raising BP, etc. Hopefully just a short term issue while Levo dose is titrated. (famous last words)

You need optimal levels of B12 - Folate - Ferritin - VitD when sorting a thyroid issue. Have these tests been done and do you have the results ?

Do you have Anaemia ? Blood pressure can increase when nutrients are low - including magnesium. When Hypo it is very common for nutrients to be low due to poor absorption. Gut issues ?

I am Hypo and yes my blood pressure was raised when GP checked it.....but when done at home on my own equipment it was "within normal range" My GP fitted me with a monitoring device for 24 hours and everything was "normal" So i didn't need tablets for hypertension and GP put my condition down to white coat syndrome.....basically anxiety of Drs presence. It happens....two bits of advice. Get your GP to monitor over 24 hrs....its a device with wires stuck to your chest and pocket sized monitor size of mobile phone slides in your pocket. You dont notice it's there....just dont bath with it..ha ha. Secondly buy your own BP monitor to regularly check it yourself.
