Progesterone, Medichecks range for post menopausal women

Hi All,

I am post menopausal, age 70 plus. I don't take any HRT currently, just thyroid hormones. I did a blood test to check out my sex hormones as per the advice in Paul Robinson's book 'The Thyroid Patient' manual'.

Progesterone: 0.8 nmol/L (postmenopause <0.401)

Oestradiol: <18.4 pmol/L (postmenopause <100)

So using the Medichecks range of <0.401 my progesterone looks to be sky high. But Paul says in his book that optimal progesterone for post menopausal women is 25-32 nmol/L which he correctly comments is a lot higher than what is shown on the lab results. Looking at it that way my progesterone is vanishingly low.

Does anybody know which is it?

Many thanks,

June

Hi june25🌹

I'm having many problems at the moment I won't bore you with them but when I was trying to get my diagnosis of hyperthyroidism in 2017/18 my gp kept saying it was the menupause but he didn't do any test for FSH.. I'm now 60 I eventually lost my thyroid in 2019 after it went thyrotoxicosis, I started going through the menupause in 2007 diagnosed by a lovely gp at my surgery unfortunately she left the surgery not long after, I had them done again in 2015 after being rushed to hospital (full blood count) and we're told I'm menupausal, I've had over range parathyroid hormones and calcium since 2020 and my gp as now caused me to go hypo after a decrease in my meds, I'm trialing T4 again not doing good on it🤦‍♀️ but I asked in 2020 if I could have my FSH done they refused saying it makes no difference to thyroid or parathyroid it would be usless in doing it, unfortunately I can't take HRT.. But I've often wondered if the FSH does have an effect on thyroid hormones.

Hi Birkie,

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post. However I am struggling to understand how it is relevant to my question? Please explain? I'm sure you don't mean to hijack my post with your own issue, do you?

Hi June25No not at all, I'm struggling to get my surgery to do anything about all my symptoms and conditions ( lost my thyroid to thyrotoxicosis in 2019 on thyroid replacement and struggling) and to be honest I'm getting nowhere with my surgery, I had the diagnosis of the menupause but just left to it but I really didn't have many symptoms of the menupause, had thyroidectomy in 2019 and were assured all my symptoms would go, but I'm still having server sweating, which I can say can't be due to my thyroid meds as they were in range when I asked for the female hormones to be tested, as I said the endo and gp refused to test them.. And as I said they both agreed the fsh does not effect tyroid hormone and vice versa.. As I was told I was menupausal and given no results I was interested in your post as I now think I may get my own fsh tested to see how mine are now because I'm unsure what progesterone and oestradiol should be as I said my endo and gp have no interest in checking my female hormons it's an interesting subject.. Sorry for replying in the way I did but it resonated with me🌹🌹

I understand and thanks for explaining. You are entitled to get your results from your gp and you should demand that you get them. Further to that, many of us have to go private to get any help with symptoms. Good luck to you.
