carbimazole

A few years ago I was taking iodine drops (only 5 drops in water a day) after seeing a naturopath because I live in Tasmania and was told that we were all iodine deficient here) but over a period of 3 years it built up in my system and caused me to have a very high reading of an over active thyroid. I was told it should be between 10 and 20 and mine was 79. I was prescribed 15mg (3 capsules x 5g) per day of carbimazole. After a couple of months and regular blood tests I was able to reduce to 10mg and then I went under (under active thyroid) so I stopped taking it then and have been fine ever since.

Being told that everyone is iodine deficient without a test, and leaving you on it for three years, was not a safe thing for anyone to recommend at all.

Your naturopath should have suggested testing before you started taking iodine, and then testing every 3 - 6 months once you started supplementing so that you would know how quickly (or slowly) your iodine was rising.

I'm glad you've been able to stop carbimazole and I hope you don't continue taking iodine.

I hope you continue feeling fine.

Yes once I went to the doctor and got diagnosed because I had started to display symptoms of being very tired, not able to exercise easily ( had been doing pilates for a really long time and had had no problem previously) and then getting swollen ankles and feet. Then I read about what can happen so I am very wary of what people tell me now and I have definitely not taken iodine since then.🙂

Have your antibodies been tested? Because excess iodine can trigger Hashi's - aka Autoimmune Thyroiditis.
