SAMe for low ferritin

Has anyone used SAMe when their iron serum is optimal, but their ferritin is low? I’d never heard of it until I read about it on the Adrenal Fatigue Facebook page, posted by an administrator.

I just wondered if anyone here has found it worked and if so, could they PM where they got it from in the UK please? I always have low ferritin and I’m sick of liver and pate! Thank you 😊.

Most of my young life my ferritin was very low. Being unable to take any of prescribed medication I was really not well. I discovered solgar organic iron supplement which worked for me. No side effects. Hope that is of some help.

Thank you for that. Is it ok to take even if your iron serum is ok?

CornishChick,

I know STTM often say MTHFR impairments are a cause of low iron but is low SAMe actually related only to low ferritin within the iron mechanisms?

Improved methylation is commonly encouraged by keeping Vit B12 & folate optimal with good diet & methylated supplemented forms.

As SAMe is involved at both the beginning and end of the methylation cycle optimising these primary nutrients is usually enough to encourage good levels. If iron still remains low then maybe SAMe and methylation problems isn't the reason.

SAMe can be tricky to supplement as excretes nurotransmitters and suddenly you may find yourself with low mood or anger, etc. Also SAMe naturally converts to homocysteine in the next step of the cycle, and elevated homocysteine is a heart risk.

Are you able to supply the science behind SAMe's connection to ferritin? Maybe c & p from the FB page? or send a link, as I don't often look but I am in STTM FB group?

Wow thank you for that! I know nothing about it, but will attach the FB post. I just struggle to increase ferritin and I’ve gone off liver and pate!

Description of SAMe

CornishChick,

I can't open the YouTube vid and suspect it only gives methylation outlines anyway.

With regards to SAMe, I'm not great on iron deficiencies because have iron overload myself but know that research on mice has shown certain neurotransmitters to enhance iron absorption.

This paper shows how the addition of supplemented GABA can help so I wondered if your FB person had further research info because SAMe is a regulator of neurotransmitters, although I have no idea which exact ones.

As mentioned above elevated SAMe can bring unwanted side effects and I'm not sure if its even available OTC in the UK, but if you get some maybe start low & slow or even try supplementing GABA with your source of iron.

For people who don't know, the full name of SAMe is S-Adenosyl methionine - it is impossible to search for anywhere on the web if you don't know that.

A long time ago I wrote a reply to someone about SAMe but, as is so often the case on HU, I can't find it now.

I did search for it before I posted, but couldn’t find anything either!

I just checked and, yes, it is in the abbreviations and acronyms section of my Vade Mecum. :-)

helvella - Vade Mecum for Thyroid

The term vade mecum means:

1. A referential book such as a handbook or manual.

2. A useful object, constantly carried on one’s person.

Please don't get put off by the number of pages!

In particular, it is not intended that you sit and read the document. Just that you download it and know you can look things up.

Not everything is in this one document - my major medicines document is still separate!

Have you tried taking iron supplements? It would be worth doing an iron panel before you started, then take a decent dose of iron for 4 - 6 weeks then re-test to see what has changed, and in what direction.

If your body handles iron well then your serum iron should stay roughly where it is and ferritin will start to rise.

But if you have other issues you could find one of the following happening :

a) Ferritin rises and serum iron drops.

b) Serum iron barely changes but ferritin rises dramatically.

c) Ferritin barely changes but serum iron rises dramatically.

I've never heard of SAMe having an effect on iron, but then it is a combination I haven't researched. I've also never taken SAMe for any condition at all.

Thank you Humanbean. My iron panel has historically been ok, just the ferritins a devil to raise. Might be worth a try then. Thank you as always, super advice 😊.

May I ask what dose would you recommend and is there a particular form of Iron I might try please? Have never taken it, so totally unfamiliar with this supplement.

Without information about your iron / ferritin / transferrin saturation I wouldn't have anything to go on, sorry.
