I have used this forum several times. My question this time is, how long do I leave taking metformin after taking thyroxine?
I have lost a 7 year battle with weight gain and now have to take metformin for diabetes 2.
I am upset as I feel as if I had a gp who had knowledge about thyroid problems I might have had a more stable weight.
I had already put in a formal complaint to the practice and I was promised that the necessary blood tests would be done, but this has not happened.
When I asked the diabetic nurse for help to lose weight she said there is no connection between hypothyroidism and diabetes.
I asked the pharmacist about the timing of taking metformin, she said with food. I then asked how long after thyroxine. She asked when I took it and I said early morning and leaving an hour before eating breakfast and 4 hours before certain vitamins.
She rolled her eyes and said,,oh gawd you do not need to give yourself such a hard time then laughed 😳
I said, very firmly, I was not giving myself a hard time and I get advice from your forum because no one seems to know much about thyroid conditions.
I ended the conversation by saying I would need to put the question on the forum.
Wow bit of a rant but you get the picture
Thank you

I have been taking Metformin for 6 years following my diagnosis of type 2 diabetes when I was 60.
For years I was under medicated on levo, but I felt well enough to stay relatively fit and I always tried to maintain a healthy diet. So being told I was diabetic came as a shock.
I always leave at least an hour between thyroid meds and taking my Metformin with breakfast.
I take my 2nd dose of Metformin with dinner.
As for your pharmacist rolling her eyes, sadly they can be as ignorant as GPs etc .
Hi Omadoll, reading your post and your long battle, made me wonder if you've come across the high fat, low carb approach to diabetes.
The story I read about it was that Dr Unwin (see link below) diagnosed a patient with diabetes, but when she returned to see him she had looked up alternatives on the internet. Instead of the standard diet she had been trying the high fat, low carb diet and she had turned her diabetes round, was much fitter and no longer needed diabetes medication. Dr Unwin tried this with others of his diabetic patients with similar results and was convinced that this was a better treatment than the official diet.
