Thyroid and odema
Welcome to the forum
Yes, if under medicated
How long since you were diagnosed
How much levothyroxine are you currently taking
Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription
What are your most recent thyroid and vitamin results
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.
Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum
What vitamin supplements are you currently taking
Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis) usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies
Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s
Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis. Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.
In U.K. medics never call it Hashimoto’s, just autoimmune thyroid disease (and they usually ignore the autoimmune aspect)
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally before 9am last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Thank you for responding I think a private test is way to go. I saw doctor with my swollen arm on Friday and she said she didn’t know what it was prescribed antibiotics and has done a blood test for kidneys.18 months ago the doctor upped my thyroxine from 100 to 125 as my blood results went off the scale, since then my blood pressure is climbing and I now have swollen arm. Thanks again hope this is the road to my recovery.
Which brand of levothyroxine are you currently taking
Many people find different brands are not interchangeable
What were your thyroid and vitamin results 6-8 weeks after you increased to 125mcg levothyroxine
Do you always get take levothyroxine on empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after
No other medications or vitamin supplements within 2 hours
Essential to regularly retest vitamin levels, TSH, Ft4 and Ft3
Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning, last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
If taking any supplements that contain biotin, stop these a week before test
Come back with new post once you get results
Yes. If you follow the link below you will see me with oedema in the left hand photo. I was very hypo and undermedicated:healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...
Absolutely!
Funnily enough just been looking at old photographs and my hypo moon face was glaringly obvious....as was my excess weight!
Correctly medicated, now over 2 stones lighter and my cheekbones have returned!!
I recently found an old one of my face that one of my kids must have taken round the time of my diagnosis... i looked rather like a chubby faced toddler , half asleep on parent duty.. (good job they could both swim , photo seems to be by a massive river that i have no recollection of taking them to )
Hi
Sorry but your description really made me laugh. I remember that parent duty somnabulism phase so well. As well as willing bedtime to come round a bit quicker.
Fortunately, i already had a 'big one' who was 8.... so i often tied the 'little one' on to him with one of those 'Wilkinet' baby carriers (the one with the massive long straps that you can't take off without the help of another grown up )
"just walk up the hill and take 'small' with you please ... mummy will catch you up in a bit"
..... an hour later .... i got up the hill to find a red faced sqwawking baby fastened to a really stressed out 8 yr old .....oops ... Bad Mummy
Hi. I was severely hypothyroid before being diagnosed last year. One of my many symptoms was swelling. I had the moonface and my legs had the spongy mucin swelling associated with thyroid. My upper arms were a little swollen, I could feel it when I wore long sleeved tops. It all thankfully subsided eventually once I started levo. So yes it can be thyroid related.
