Vagifem

Sorry this isn’t strictly a thyroid topic - so will understand if admin delete this!

Does anyone use Vagifem? If so, I wondered if you’d be so kind as to share your experience of its impact please? Please PM if you wish it to remain private - I understand it is a intimate area!

Thank you!

Morning. I started on Vagifem 10 less than a week ago, so I can't really say if it's had any effect on anything yet. However, I chose this rather than patches or oral oestrogen as it's a tiny dose and gets to work where it's actually needed. My (limited!) understanding is that it's only oral oestrogen that can effect levothyroxine absorption and thyroid hormone levels as they are both broken down in the liver. Or something... I've Googled vaginal oestrogen quite a bit and it seems to be the best way of getting an effective, low dose without any negative interactions.

I used it successfully for many years, no problems.

Thank you. That’s the kind of reassurance I’m looking for. I’m just one of those people who don’t always take well to new medications!

Ditto Bantam's reply

Being topical it’s not like taking a new oral med, but you have to give it a couple of months to work and get full effects.

Thank you. Think I’ll give it a try.

bantam12,

Do you know if the Vegifem dose amount is enough to stop systemic menopause systems?

I had my Estrogel & Utrogestan withdrawn last September and I'm still getting hot flushes at night.

As far as I’m aware it only treats local symptoms as any absorption is in minuscule amounts so wouldn’t help with the other common symptoms such as hot flushes.

My understanding also is that it is it for very specific issues, not general menopausal symptoms.

Ditto comments above. It takes a while to work fully but then it’s great. No problems, no side effects.

Very reassuring, thank you so much for sharing.

It’s a very safe, very very low dose of oestrogen-the scary risks outlined in the leaflet are out of date and inaccurate according to menopause specialists, so don’t let that put you off.

The only side effects I got were from the loading dose (when you use it daily for 2 weeks) & that was a bit of backache and bloating but it soon passed off & now I only feel the benefits! Good luck 😉

Great thank you - you have hit the nail on the head - the leaflet terrified me!

I've been using vagifem 10 for about 4 months. The difference in my sleep pattern is dramatic. I sleep full, normal nights 2 to 3 x a week after nearly 30 years of terrible night symptoms and wakefulness. Also, post-menopausal vaginal dry burning, which I thought was a UTI , is seldom a problem now. And, because vagifem is localised, it doesn't interfere with ingested thyroid medication. There aren't the side effects of HRT, which is a much stronger dose. I do have some breast tenderness, though. But that isn't much, compared to the benefits. I wouldn't want to go without it now!
