Symptomatic Messing Up 1 NDT dose?

I am on 2 grains of NP Thyroid for the past 1 1/2 weeks. I started NP before Christmas and since slowly increasing it. I have done very well and had long periods of feeling much like myself since getting to 2 grains. There is room for improvement, but definitely better and very hopefully I will be me again soon. I even started a college class.

I have been taking it at night right before going to bed. Last night was the Super Bowl here in the U.S. and I although I stopped eating 2 hours prior to taking my dose, we did have a lot of cheese (calcium). I have been SO symptomatic today...mood swings, tired, foggy, etc. It feels like I did not take my dose at all last night. I assume it is because of the short T3 life. I know I can still have ups and downs, but today was ridiculous. I am going to move it back to mornings and hope it works well so that food is not a factor.

Has anyone experienced being very symptomatic after not taking or getting the full benefits of a T3 or NDT dose. If this is the cause of my lousy day, then I don't want to do it again.

I assume it is because of the short T3 life.

It's not that short. The half-life of T3 in the blood is about 24 hours - meaning that 24 hours after you take a dose, there will be half left in the blood - 48 hours later, there will be 1/4 dose left, etc. - but the T3 that gets into the cells (and that isn't an instant process) stays there for about three days. T3 doesn't do anything until it gets into the cells, anyway. It's inert in the blood. So, you wouldn't necessaryily feel the effect of not fully absorbing one dose straight away.

We all have bad days from time to time, so this was probably just a coincidence. :)

Since I have only been on this dose for a short time, I assume I will feel the fluctuations more than after several weeks or months. It is just frustrating when I am cruising along and those yucky old feelings come back. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

No, I don't think that would necessarily be true - possibly even the opposite.

An alternative explanation is that you have dairy intolerance.

I find that these days I can’t eat a lot of dairy without having side effects. It’s very sad because I love most dairy products—but increasingly my body doesn’t love me eating them. :(

I guess anything is possible. I have never had issues with dairy, but doesn't mean it can't develop. I did give up drinking cows milk, but still eat cheese, cottage cheese, abd yogurt. Of course tye occasional ice cream splurge as well.

Hey there again ;

I would imagine if I switched my dose from one end of the day to the other I would have a ----day a well :

It's generally recommended to take any thyroid hormone medication in the morning, before the need for energy to get you through the day :

I follow the circadian rhyme of the body and take my NDT at around 3 in the morning on a toilet break so well away from anything else.

Well personally with some brands NDT I feel the effect immediately of missing even one dose. After a few weeks taking Erfa and TS I found I could miss a dose or a couple and not really feel it until around a day and a half. But others, if I say miss a dose morning and/or afternoon I feel it by bedtime. By the next day I absolutely must get back on track. It might be about ill you are without it. I have fibromyalgia syndrome, and pain kicks in very quickly if I am erratic with meds. Likewise I really feel the boost of taking a potent ndt/t3 almost immediately.

Hi HeartWoman...glad to see another U S contributor on here. There aren't that many of us on this site. Have you ever tried splitting your NDT dose? My husband and I both take NDT. He only takes his in one dose. I split mine...first, very early in AM...with at least 2 hours before food. Then I take the second later in the day...late afternoon, also away from food. My husband isn't good about remembering to take his meds and he's on more then just NDT, so I've never tried to get him to split his dose. By splitting mine, I don't have that draggy feeling in the early evening and I sleep soundly.

Just have to say that Super Bowl is an annual kick in our diet and notorious for people not showing up to work on Monday. Followed up by Valentine’s Day chocolates - sure to mess with our symptoms. You could try an extra half grain and you may be due for an increase anyway.I take NP and sometimes take some extra, I also sometimes take a drug holiday to give my body a day to kind of find itself. On the occasional day I skip my meds on purpose I don’t notice any issues.

HeartWoman,

Gosh, yes. I multi dose NDT and on the very occasional time I have forgotten my second dose it has been the tiredness & brain fog the next day that has reminded me.

Even with T4 working in the background it is amazing how sensitive we can be to T3 that my brain misses when I don't take it.
