How-to Information for

Self-treating Hypothyroid Patients

Self-help Q&As

Yesterday we posted at ThyroidScience.US several patients' questions and my answers about the proper use of dietary desiccated thyroid. My answers, however, also apply to patients who are using other types of thyroid hormone products. My intention in publishing the new Q&As is to assist self-treating hypothyroid patients to understanding how best to go about recovering their health and then maintaining it.

Untold numbers of hypothyroid patients have been self treating for many years. I know this because I've met them personally when doing comprehensive metabolic evaluations for some, and long-distance consulting for hundreds more. Many of the people have been mothers and fathers treating themselves and/or their children. Many more have been tutoring other family members or friends in self treatment. And many other patients have been members of groups of self-treating patients. All of these patients consulted me to learn scientifically-based methods for getting optimal results in self treatment with thyroid hormone.

A short while ago, I decided that I should publish everything I can to help self-treating patients to succeed. One reason for my decision is that I sympathized with the people’s plight. After all, I'm one of them. Some 25-years ago, I recovered my own health by learning that I was substantially resistant to thyroid hormone, and learning how to successfully treat myself for the disorder.

Were it up to the endocrinology specialty, I would still be ill and impaired from too little thyroid hormone regulation. By the specialty's practice guidelines (actually dictates), I wouldn't be able to use even T4 replacement because my TSH was within its reference range. If I allowed that specialty to tyrannically control the fate of my health, however, I’d be permitted to use an array of still-patented (and therefore very expensive) drugs to control my symptoms of too little thyroid hormone regulation. But by my recognizing the modern endocrinology specialty for what it is, rejecting its commercially-derived practice guidelines, and treating myself according to what thyroid science taught me, I've remained remarkably healthy for the past 25 years.

In view of my own history, how can I not do everything possible to help others who've been forced to take the path of self treatment, as I did. As I said above, untold numbers of patients are already on that path. I feel an ethical and humanitarian responsibility to help them to walk it well. Hence, yesterday we posted the new educational Q&As at ThyroidScience.US.

Among the Q&As we posted today, one deals with how a patient can know when he or she is on the right dosage of Thyro-GoldTM (or any other thyroid hormone product). Another deals with finding one's best dosage by systematically monitoring his or her response to different doses. With that Q&A, we’ve provided a link to a blank monitoring form that patients can adapt to their individual needs. Another Q&A deals with practical ways to learn whether or not a patient’s daily dose is too high and overstimulating him or her. Along with that Q&A, we’ve provide a link to a new overstimulation form with 20 potential symptoms of thyroid hormone overstimulation.

Most of my answers at ThyroidScience.US are replies to questions people have asked about dietary desiccated thyroid, which they are treating themselves with. However, the information I give in my questions are relevant to any thyroid hormone product a person might be taking. Tammy and I will appreciate any feedback on the Q&As. We sincerely hope they help you to fully recover your health. Self-help Q&As

For self-treating patients who missed them, we recommend the following articles I wrote for previous newsletters:

● No more begging and pleading with misguided doctors: liberation through self-education, and action on your own behalf.

● Is it irresponsible to advise hypothyroid patients to treat themselves with HSF? One physician thinks so.

With reference to your last paragraph I agree 100% that it is not irresponsible to help/assist hypo patients to recover their health that the Endocrinologists are completely ignoring when we know that T3 suits many people who cannot remove their clinical symptoms with T4 alone.

We all know quite well that the majority of doctors in the UK have absolutely no knowledge at all as they insist upon levothyroxine for patients. If the patients do well upon it they wont be searching the internet for help

It's a godsend if they get help/advice that helps restore their health -despite the ignorance of the medical professionals who stick to out-of-date advice that is of no help to a symptomatic patient.
