Periods have stopped with Hashi's

Hi everyone,

I'm 34 and was officially diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease in early December after being unwell for a long time and I'm currently playing the waiting game to see a specialist at the hospital and hopefully receive treatment (not currently been prescribed anything apart from vit D and B12). I realised I can't remember the last time I had a period and I'm starting to freak out a bit. I've been on the contraceptive pill for ages and it's not unusual for them to be irregular but it's been months since I had one at all and I'm really worried.

Does anyone have any experience of this and will starting the medication I need make them come back?

Thank you.

Previous post shows TSH 7

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

GP should redo Thyroid (and vitamin) testing 6-8 weeks after last test

Always test as early as possible in morning to get highest TSH

You need TSH, Ft4 and Ft3, vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Ask that prolactin is tested too. High prolactin common with autoimmune thyroid disease, and would cause periods to stop

If repeat thyroid test TSH is over 5 then GP should prescribe levothyroxine

Standard starter dose of levothyroxine is 50mcg

See flow charts on top of page 2

gp-update.co.uk/Latest-Upda...

Autoimmune thyroid disease is almost always managed by GP…..they certainly can/should start you on levothyroxine if next test TSH over 5

Thanks for your reply. I had another blood test last week and have a phone appointment to discuss results with GP on 8 Feb. It was done in the right conditions (pre-9am, fasting) so I'm assuming it'll just be more of the same but my GP didn't mention anything about prescribing thyroid medication after the last one, he just said he'd refer me to the hospital so I assumed they'd be the ones to manage any treatment. We'll see.

So you are legally entitled to copies of your recent test results, once GP has seen them

There’s over 2 million people in the U.K. on levothyroxine, vast majority are entirely managed by GP

Serum vitamin B12 level - 185 ng/L [144.0-915.0]

Serum folate level - 5.0 ug/L [3.1-19.9]

Serum ferritin level - 65 ng/mL [11.0-306.8]

Results from 3 months ago

Obviously these must be retested to see in improving or not

B12 was very low, we’re you tested for Pernicious Anaemia before starting B12 supplements

Exactly what B12 are you currently taking

No actual vitamin D result

How much vitamin D are you currently taking

These will be included in the results for my recent blood test which I'll get back shortly. Currently taking 1000IU vit D and 100 micrograms B12.

1000iu vitamin is low dose

Do you know what vitamin D result was before supplementing

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

ouh.nhs.uk/osteoporosis/use...

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol. Some CCG areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via NHS private testing service when supplementing

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7. One spray = 1000iu

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average

Magnesium best taken in the afternoon or evening, but must be four hours away from levothyroxine
