Hashimoto's/cytokines

This is a bit of a difficult question but I thought if anyone could answer it, you lovely people could!

I have just recently bought some Life Extension Cytokine Suppress. I thought they would be beneficial, especially since I've just had a Hashi's flare up. However, it's got me thinking. I do still have some symptoms but other than that I don't tend to get ill very much. When I get mozzie bites I get a really severe reaction but this goes away after a few days whereas if my husband gets one, it troubles him for ages. Because of this I think my immune system must be a bit over-zealous, which is bad news for my Thyroid but possibly good news for the rest of my body so I'm not sure whether to take the tablets now. Any thoughts anyone?

informaniac,

The forum rules allow you to post details of tablets & supplements. If you inform which tablets you are referring to then members will be able to comment.

infomaniac,

Oh, this looks interesting.

I benefit from a little green tea in my anti inflammatory combo but be aware some Hashi sufferers may not get on with green tea because of the way Hashi modulates our immune systems and green teas association with stimulating TH-2 cytokines.

T-helper cells (TH) are lymphocytes (types of white blood cells) that recognise foreign pathogens, or in autoimmune disease normal tissue. In response they produce cytokines which are hormonal messenger proteins responsible for the biological effects of the immune system.

These are divided into subgroups but the two most associated with Hashi are TH-1 (killer T cells) & TH-2 (antibody producing B cells) and it is when these don't work in balance that autoimmunity can start.

The greater the imbalance the greater the inflammation our body produces & the less effective/efficient our immune response becomes. Over time this wears the immune system down and is why we aim to reduce elevated thyroid antibodies which equates to a hyper inflammatory response.

Re the mung beans, some say Hashi sufferers shouldn’t eat mungbeans because of the inflammatory causing lectins often found in legumes but mung beans don’t contain much and I love mung bean soup. I don’t even soak them before cooking.

Datis Kharrizan explains more detail on this topic in his books but in case you don't have them the link below give further info about which foods, plants & herbs influence which part of the immune system regarding Hashi.

Thanks a lot, that's really helpful. I was a bit iffy about the green tea too but I felt it might do more good than harm in this case.
