Biotin - how does it affect blood tests?
IMPORTANT...If you are taking vitamin B complex... - Thyroid UK
IMPORTANT...If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS
Thanks for posting the reminder as sometimes we might forget to do so.
Was there meant to be something else there?
It rather looks as if something is missing.
Note: Not all blood tests are affected by biotin. Only those that rely on Streptavidin (which binds incredibly strongly to biotin). Physical tests such as Full Blood Count will not be affected. And not all other tests are immunoassays (the only ones which might rely on Streptavidin ).
Further, the amount of biotin in our diets is not thought to affect tests in any way. Low dose biotin, which is in similar doses to what we might get from diet, are unlikely to have an impact. Many vitamin B complexes do contain much more biotin.
I'm guessing you've seen this advice about stopping biotin in relation to a private medical test kit, and are asking here why it's a problem?
If so, this might help:
Supplements that contain Biotin above recommended amounts may cause false results in some lab tests, including those that measure levels of certain hormones, like thyroid hormone.6,7 thyroiduk.org/biotin-and-th...
