A great many report dry eye & puffy eye type symptoms with under active thyroid.
When with headache it’s often eye strain. When was last sight test? Opticians can often be more helpful than GP.
‘Thyroid eye disease’ Is usually associated with Graves’ disease and used to be referred to as Graves’ ophthalmology as it’s stems from the same immune system attack on health tissues but there are rare cases with under active autoimmune (which includes Ords).
Do any of these apply?
* Change in the appearance of the eyes (usually staring or bulging eyes)
* A feeling of grittiness in the eyes or excessive dryness in the eyes
* Watery eyes
* Intolerance of bright lights
* Swelling or feeling of fullness in upper or lower eyelids
* New bags under the eyes
* Redness of the lids and eyes
* Blurred or double vision
* Pain in or behind the eye, especially when looking up, down or sideways
* Difficulty moving the eyes
Thank you, my eyes felt very swollen, and watery, couldn’t cope with the light , had a problem getting a good passport photo, kept saying my eyes were closed. But the last few days very painful and terrible headache going down the back of my neck. I also have developed a very swollen stomach over the last few months even though I felt great and had the best summer in years, gardening etc.. Have new glasses, so phoned the optician today, hoping he will reply tomorrow. Also dry if bags under and over the eyes, but no difficulty moving my eyes. Thank you
You do have a few of the eye symptoms, you don’t have to have all of them to have a diagnosis.
I would definitely have optician check, some stores can liaise directly with hospital specialist & if not set up to do that they can write report/letter for GP to arrange referral.
This charity is free to join and has excellent information on all things related to thyroid eye disease (TED) tedct.org.uk. (They also have Facebook page & advice line)
They recommended this leaflet. Take along to any appointment & refer back to points to help explain why you might have concerns.

Swollen stomach a different concern. Is it constant or worse after eating?
Gluten intolerance common with under active thyroid.
TRbo,
Excellent info from PurpleNails above. Also Sjögren's Syndrome that affects parts of the body that produces fluids, ie dry eyes, mouth, etc is common in people with other autoimmune condition(s).
Please don’t leave it to chance. I had full blown ted with hashimotoes. I also know a few without any thyroid antibodies that have it. It’s not as rare as people think. Get it checked out and I really hope you don’t have it. Good luck.
