WFPB Diet

I started following a gluten free wholefood plant based diet without any oil sugar and very low salt back at the start of May this year. I still feel I have more work to do repairing my body but I have so far lost 2stones 10ibs in weight, stopped taking tramadol that I was on for pain management and reduced my levothyroxine dose from 175 too 100. Following the diet has been easy and there is no need to count calories as the food is so not calorie dense - allowing me to eat as much as I want and so never feeling hungry. I feel better than I have in many years and for the first time I can remember I have real hope that I can recover my health.

Great that you are feeling better, did you reduce your Levothyroxine because you were now over medicated after a blood test due to your diet or was it your own decision?

I began to feel over medicated so cut back a little and have had blood tests done each time after I have done a reduction. My levels are fine. I have to say that I was taking and needed the 175 for about 12yrs prior to this diet change.

That is a very useful thing to know regarding the diet and the reduction of medication is surely a good thing if warranted as in your case it is.

Can you tell me what diet book you followed? Thankyou.

If you need guidance try the forks over knives website its a good place to start, they have a lot of recipes there. I didn't use any diet book - I watched a number of podcasts by various leading Doctors in the field and did a lot of internet research. I used to be a chef so already had a good grasp of the basics of cooking. My Husband is now around 90% plant based too as he likes the food a lot.Legumes play a key part in my diet. they are a to be found in all of the "blue zone diets" and provide a great source of protein, dietary fibre and minerals. I eat lots of different homemade soups and vegetable stews. Using a variety of herbs and spices means that no food tastes bland and I dont seem to be getting bored of coming up with new ideas.

I take vitamin D (as I live in Scotland) and B12 daily.

Thank you Scotty4321 - very kind. I also have been looking at Michael Gregar NutritionFacts.org I find it all a bit daunting so I will have a look at Fork over knives website. I am gluten free and largely dairy free. Susie

I love Nutritionfacts.org! I have many of Dr. Greger’s book. FOK is really good too. Dr Greger spoke at a conference I attended in 2015.

Huge congrats on your success!

Just an update; I have just had my latest blood test results, I am still within the normal range for my thyroid levels and my lipids have also dropped into the normal range for the first time I can remember. I am still on the WFPB diet with no salt oil or sugar and very much enjoying my meals. I have found by batch cooking and freezing portions I don't have to cook every day and my freezer is my best friend. My weight loss has stayed off and I love putting on my size 10 jeans every morning:)
