I can't tell you where to get Tirosint but it does get listed in the British National Formulary, so it should be possible for doctors to prescribe it. The forms and types of Levo licensed for prescription in the UK are given on this link
Tirosint is listed under "American Levothyroxine (not licensed in the UK)"
so your GP would have to make a decision as to whether to prescribe an unlicensed medication and even if he did prescribe it it's doubtful he would know which pharmacies could obtain it. You could start by contacting some pharmacies in your area and enquiring as to whether it's something they have dispensed before or whether they can obtain it.
Tirosint is available in many EU countries (and the USA) - but not always under the same name.
I have recently been adding some details to my thyroid hormone medicines document. A significant reason being to ensure that people are aware of where it is available and what names. That phase of updates is not yet complete but there is quite a bit in it already:
helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines
I have created, and try to maintain, a document containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world.
This might be helpful if a pharmacy is willing to order it. Unless they are particularly on the ball, they'd probably look up "Tirosint" and miss the other names. Also, everyone needs to be aware of the product Tirosint Sol which is a liquid (not gel) formulation in small ampoules.
Hi there, I'm trying to source Tirosint as my NHS doctor has agreed to prescribe it. The link to your list is no longer active. How can I get the list? Thanks
My GP doctor refused to supply it. They don’t believe I need it.
I get my Tirosint on private prescription from Roseway Labs, I get 50ug and 25ug as they don’t do 75ug. It is expensive and costs £65 for 50 gel capsules. As I need two capsules for a dose it is costing me £130 for 50 doses.
I need them as I react to corn and wheat. I am at present enquiring with the makers of the product who are based in Italy and I hope to buy 75ug from them at what I hope will be a cheaper cost. Though with Brexit and customs perhaps not.
If you look up thread a little, you'll find a link to my thyroid hormone medicines document. That shows Tirosint (under various names) is available in many European countries.
It sometimes seems missed that it is actually made in Europe!
Is it possible your GP would write such a prescription? After all, it's really no skin of their nose if you get a private prescription and have ti pay for the dispensing of it.
Hi, sorry I'm late to answer.I myself take tirosint, have done for over 2 years, I get mine from a pharmacy in Greece.
I had an absolute nightmare trying to source it here in the uk after I moved back here from Cyprus.
I managed to get my endocrinologist to write a private prescription for tirosint but it would cost something like £250 a month as it isn't available on the NHS.
I spoke to roseway labs, a compounding pharmacy and they could do my prescription for around £65 a month, again still too expensive.
My suggestion is contact some pharmacies in mainland Greece, it works out about £8 per month. I would give you my contact but he did it under duress and said he wasn't comfortable with it due to brexit and uncertainty of me actually receiving my meds.
I got a years supply, and will need to find another pharmacy to refill my order.
Generally they don't need a prescription just need to order.
