I have read that low levels of vitamin D, zinc and vitamin C can increase your risk of getting Covid.

Perhaps you could start supplementing these if you don't currently take them?

You might find the following paper of interest :

Thanks for the link 😊

Great link which Ive now speed-read - it adds to the 30-50 reports I have on the positive effects of natural support against covid, particularly vit D. Re D, on this thyroid forum, I would expect most ensure higher serum levels, as advocated mainly by Seaside Susie. Otherwise its effect in covid protection is significantly reduced.

Unfortunately most people seem to think they are protected against viruses etc with the tiny doses from supermarkets!

When I first took vitamin D several years ago I thought that 1000 iU per day was a big dose. My level actually dropped over the next three months. Nowadays I take 4000 iU per day most days.

Indeed. We take 2000iu to try toaintain our 100-150nmol/l level. But we are all different as Susie rightly states.

Indeed we are. My maintenance dose (to keep as close to 150nmol/L as possible after being severely deficient) is 5,000iu x 6 days a week. For some people 5,000iu is the loading dose for deficiency.

Do you have any reported data indicating that vitamin D (or indeed any of the vitamins/minerals) improves immunity as an addition to vaccination? I understand the theory as to why it might eg vitamin D modulates acquired immunity as well as innate. And I certainly understand their separate merits. But I've searched in vain for data on the combination for months.

Hi Sorry to hear this and understand your worry. My sister has graves and just got over covid. I am Hypothyroid and had covid. So did my mum who is elderly with thyroid issues and lots of problems we are all ok. From what I’ve read it doesn’t seem to make illness any worse and fingers crossed first you don’t get it and if you do it’s minimal symptoms like it is for many x

My teenager also has COVID (after attending a festival last weekend). I’m ensuring I take vit D3/ K2, zinc, vit C daily (as humanbean mentioned) I also take selenium and turmeric which have helped lower inflammation in the past (I have Hashimotos & mild TED). I have the windows in the house open for improved air circulation (in addition to following general advice re hand washing etc). Best wishes to you.

Buddy. I'd also welcome your response to the question I've just asked humanbean (reproduced below). I'm a strong advocate of natural treatments and would welcome the data indicated to add to my burgeoning portfolio. I suspect there is nothing (pharma certainly wouldn't wish to fund the work) but live in hope.

I don’t have Graves but I do have Hashimotos. I had covid in March last year well before vaccinations arrived. I got through it without being hospitalised. Vaccinations aren’t 100% unfortunately and those with two jabs and even three eventually may catch it. But having the vaccine reduces your chances significantly of becoming very ill with it.

I'm not vaccinated. My daughter came back from a festival two weeks ago with covid. We made her stay in her room for 10 days, she wore a mask when leaving her room to use the bathroom, and sanitized her hands. We keep the the windows open. Neither me or my husband caught it, even though on the day she returned we had hugged her and spent time in the car with her, before symptoms had showed up. The next day she became ill, it then took three days of testing before she showed positive.

Being that you decided you can't (or won't) be vaccinated, have you optimised some/all of the vitamins mentioned in the replies here instead?

I do my best to support my immune system by taking, Zinc, Vit C, spirulina, Vit D3, selenium and colloidal silver. As well as eating a plant based organic diet.

I use T3 only to support my thyroid.

Well done! Sounds like that may be what protected you assuming relevant serum vitamin D levels eg >100nmol/l, attained etc. Do you know your respective levels?

my June results were 118.0 nmol/L

I have no idea what those numbers mean, what should it be?

The Vit D Society and Grassroots Health both recommend a level of 100-150nmol, with Grassroots Health's recent blog post recommending at least 125nmol. So your result is good.

Besides vit D (which is good for you), you could test serum zinc and vit C if you wished although I suspect few do.

My zinc is ~50% through range and my Dad"s ~90%. We've not serum tested C but urinalysis indicates it's probably high too.

Hello, I have graves disease and am fully vaccinated and wait with interest to see if anyone replies.Just a story about my experience with covid. We had to shield as a family of 5 due to my eldest sons previous Hodgkins lymphoma and his continuing ulcerative colitis. My daughter caught covid the week before the first lockdown. She thinks she caught it on the bus to work even through she religiously used sanitizer and had a scarf around her face.It was a while before we realised she had it because she never had a cough and that was the main symptom then. She was never tested as they weren't doing testing then but she was ill with all other symptoms and was off work for 6 weeks. The positive thing is that no-one else in our household of 5 caught it.She did have her own bedroom and I was religiously wiping everything down.Doorknobs, light switches, bathroom etc.Plus we were religious with handwashing not touching face opening windows etc. We have come along way since then ,we were actually terrified. We are lucky to have a vaccine and know much more about the virus. I'm sure if you and your son follow all the hygiene rules you'll be ok.Try to think of all the positives we have now.You have done everything you can to protect yourself.Best wishes to you both.

Thanks all. I was a bit worried what would happen if I caught it but now seeing my child ill and cry for me i can't just leave him in his room on his own when he's very ill.
