Long term Hashimoto

I have a question.

A good endo I had in 90s said that Hashimoto could be caused by a virus setting off the autoimmune response, possibly connected with CFS. He couldn’t do biopsy on me since nothing left.

So I’m wondering what happened with that virus research? Also where has the virus gone?

I know the glandular fever that set off my CFS sporolates in the liver- at least that was the theory in 70s when I was working on rubella which does the same but in the spinal cord.

I gather the current theory is mitochondrial changes.

Where does that incentive by the body to self destruct go after it has completely destroyed the thyroid?

In the last posts I was informed that the enzyme to convert T3 is contained in each cell of the body. So is this also destroyed by the same incentive?

What else connects to Hashimoto destruction?

Sorry that’s quite long but some of you will know where I’m going

as far as anyone knows , Autoimmune Hypothyroid limits it's destruction to thyroid tissue, unlike some other Autoimmune disease's that attack several organs. (looking at previous replies you may actually have Ord's rather than Hashimotos' .. technically Hashimoto's has a goitre (enlarged thyroid) and damages the thyroid by making it 'fibrous' (i think )without physically shrinking it....whereas Ord's doesn't have a goitre and atrophies the thyroid (Atrophic thyroiditis)

However both are often referred to as Hashimoto's , or under the umbrella term of Autoimmune Hypothyroidism. (Most people have forgotten all about poor old Mr Ord. ( healthunlocked.com/thyroidu... ~ meet Dr Hakaru Hashimoto)

I've never seen anything to suggest Autoimmune hypothyroidism attacks /damages the deiodinases.

I have a family history of Hashimoto dating back to my grt grandmother same with diabetes. So all assume Hashimoto and there was initially some swelling. But I’ll have a closer look at Ord.

Thanks for the posting of the 9gurus- excellent papers/ synopsis.

I think you are right it’s Ord’s or atrophic thyroiditis - one of my endo doctors used that term before.

It’s familial, male and female- grt gran, gran, father, male cousin with Downs, and thyroid can be totally destroyed. It now explains the tests my endo in 80s wanted to run. Thanks for that. He’s retired but still working. I’ll consider going to see him- very approachable.

I suspect the really bad diabetes results I’ve had recently are also going the same way. I need to research more.

I found a very interesting paper in the New England journal of Med from 80s. They talked with a great deal more knowledge and understanding back then. So what went wrong? Did it come from the USA pharm companies wanting to make a big profit?

But now the students learn only Levo.

Once upon a time there was a famous textbook for teaching thyroid stuff .. i can't remember it's name off hand (might have been something like werner and ingbars 'the thyroid' .... or not ) Anyway it had load and loads of chapters on all sorts of physical signs/ symptoms . cos knowledge of physical signs/symptoms was of course necessary for diagnosis before the day's of TSH tests .... then little by little they removed this chapter then those chapters then these chapters .... and now nobody knows anything anymore ... It just say's "do a TSH test" ....... Brilliant .
