Hypothyroidism and easy bruising and bleeding?

Hi all, I'm currently trying to research if there's a link between Hypothyroidism/Hashimotos and easy bleeding (nosebleeds, teeth bleeding after brushing and flossing etc.

I have both Hypothyroidism and Hashimotos and have noticed tiny ( pinhead) red dots on my skin over the past 3yrs since diagnosis. I've also started getting gum bleeding after brushing or flossing my teeth. I've also noticed that my nose bleeds quite easy if I blow it etc. I've been tested for leukemia but thank god its not that. My due back to haematology dept in 2 weeks for the results of blood test and whilst waiting I've been researching and found a number of studies regarding a link between Hypothyroidism and acquired von willebrand syndrome( blood clotting issues). So my question is do you have Hypothyroidism/Hashimotos and any easy bruising or bleeding? Thanks in advance ☺.

Hi Nessynu,

My dentist told me that bleeding gums can be related to thyroid conditions. My gums improved massively when key vitamins were in range (ferritin, B12, folate, Vit D) . I supplemented with a good B Complex (I use Thorne Basic B).

On my dentist’s recommendation I also floss x2 day and gum bleeding has subsided.

I also bruise very easily & have some circulation issues (possible Reynaulds) and am taking turmeric to improve this. Others swear by Ginko Bilbao, but I haven’t tried this yet. I find using essential oils like francincense, geranium & lavender in a carrier massage oil helps my skin & circulation. I take arnica (when I remember!) to reduce the incidence of bruising.

Very best wishes to you.

Hi Buddy, thanks for replying. I've been taking b vitamins, vit D+k2, vit C etc for over a year. I had bloods taken a few days ago for iron, folate etc so hopefully they should be back soon. I also have circulation issues when I sit down watching TV for too long! Leg cramps etc so i take magnesium for that. Im apprehensive about flossing now due to bleeding so haven't been doing as much as I should. I think I'm getting a fear of blood now that never bothered me before! Thanks again for this information.

I understand panic re blood loss from gums but can say after persevering flossing x2 day with TePe interdental sticks for 2 months this greatly improved. I also used some Corsodyl mouth wash for gum health. Do post your vitamin results when you have them as these may need tweaking for optimal benefits.

Just off the top of my head: vitamin K can help with blood clotting and it is a vitamin we need for calcium direction to the bones. You bruise easily if your blood is too thin, hence K to thicken it up a bit. There is also something in bananas which helps with blood health - but it's very late, I will research it tomorrow, it might be potassium, I will check that out.

Thank you. I do take Vitamin K daily and I eat bananas daily.

Hi Nessynu

I bruise easily (I was also checked for leukemia many years ago!) and my nose bleeds were so bad as a child, that my nose was cauterised when I was 16 - this actually worked, until I got pregnant at the age of 24! We didn't find out about my having hypothyrodism (never been told if it is hashimotos or graves) until I was 28, and no-one has ever suggested a link.

Thanks for replying. I also had bad nosebleeds as a kid and got my nose cauterised when I was 10yr. I had little to no bleeding for years until I started menstruation and then 15yrs of very heavy menstrual bleeding each month. It stopped when I had my 1st child at age 32. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and Hashimotos at age 45. As these conditions progressed I noticed tiny red dots on my chest and stomach which I mentioned to my doc who told me there micro hemorrhages under my skin. Then I started noticing nosebleeds ( minor) when blowing my nose and last week I had blood drawn and as I left the doctors I noticed it was bleed through my sleeve a bit so I'm referred to haematology now. I've seen papers linking Hypothyroidism and Hashimotos to bleeding disorders. Oh it never ends.

Hello,

I also get a lot of bleeding and bruising and recently had a bout of nosebleeds 3 - 4 times a week lasting anywhere up to an hour. My platelets have always been low in the past but this time they're in range.

Four years ago they'd dropped to "dangerously" low so I was referred to hematology, who carried out HIV, heliobacter and hepatitis to rule them out, by which time my platelets had increased and no longer "dangerous". My GP is supposed to be monitoring them but isn't (until the nosebleeds) and refer back for a bone marrow biopsy if it happens again.

I found that taking selenium increases my nosebleeds and taking zinc increases my platelets (my GP tested my zinc levels before I started taking them). I've also started looking at acquired von willebrand syndrome and was planning on asking about it at my next endo appointment.

I'd like to hear how you get on.

I have this too, the nosebleeds since childhood, but they don't trouble me, I think it protects us from high blood pressure. (Once, when I leaped up to leave the room with a nose bleed my boss commented "that's the most elegant nosebleed I've ever seen"!). I have some of those tiny red dot haemorrhages too, and as a small child had a stomach haemorrhage. I've always thought this is just the way some of us are. And, I bleed for a long time after blood draws, saturating those wodges of cotton wool sometimes. The bleeding gums though you might need to look into. When my dentist changed the new one was pretty horrified at the state of my mouth, very good teeth but poorly gums and lost bone under the teeth. She advised using te-pe brushes and brushing hard so that it does bleed, to clear away all the debris and get back to good, healthy tissue. After a while of this my gums are now in good condition and pain I'd lived with for a long time without really being aware of it has gone. It might be worth you looking more into this gum bleeding.

Best of luck.

Thank you for this information. What is a te-pe brush and do your gums still bleed after brushing? Thanks in advance.

Ah, I should have said interdental brush, tiny brushes for between the teeth and good for the gums. I love them. No, now my gums don't bleed, but it took about 2 years to heal. Good luck

Actually I do have crazy bruising and often wondered if their is a connection between hypothyroidism and this and obviously the Endo says “no” .

There's always a reason for random bruising if you haven't had a fall etc so it worth a mention a your next visit to the doctor.

I mention it to every doctor I see and they all give the 🤷‍♀️

I'm glad you got a clean bill of health on the leukemia, but did they say anything about Immune Thrombocytopenia? Ordinarily, the pinhead spots and easy bruising are a sign of a low platelet count. And the immune system can destroy platelets, the condition being known as Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP).

An article on the University of California San Francisco website (a premier medical research organization) says:"In the United States, an estimated 30,000 new cases of ITP are diagnosed each year. Approximately 70 percent of adults with ITP are women, and 70 percent of these women are under the age of 40 when diagnosed. ITP is more common in children than in adults, and boys and girls are equally affected.

People with mild ITP generally need monitoring but no immediate treatment. Patients may have to make lifestyle changes, such as avoiding contact sports and certain medications that affect platelets, including aspirin and ibuprofen."

Hope this helps, Nessynu!

RockyPath thank you. I did look into ITP as a possible cause so I'm going to mention it to haematology on my next visit.

I bruise very easily. I don't have the other problems though. I've never once experienced a nose bleed in my entire life and as long as I'm flossing regularly, my gums don't bleed.

The brusing I experience happens overnight sometimes. I wake up with bruises so its usually a sign of low platelets or some other blood clotting issues going on but thank you for replying

I also bruise easily and find bruises all over and no memory how I got them. I also get cramp and numbness in legs if sitting for too long, nose can bleed very easily too but thankfully not very often my toes often look purple too. I have been taking vitamins and my bloods are the best theyve been in ages.

Hi, do you tiny red dots anywhere on your skin by any chance?

Escapologygirl profile image
Escapologygirl in reply to Nessynu

not noticed but my face is so bad its worse than teenage acne

Try checking your Vitamin B12.

Hypothyroidism can interfere with and destroy the Intrinsic Factor required to transport Vitamin B12 into the BloodStream. The way around this is to take Methylcobalamin and not the more available CyanoCobalamin. Pop a tab under the tongue and leave it there, where it can go directly into the bloodstream (called sub-lingual)
