Hi everyone. I started on NDT recently, and still increasing my dose weekly by 1/4 grain. I'm currently on 1 and 3/4 grain but still very much having hypo symptoms (brain fog, fatigue, ringing in my ears + the other usuals). I'm still planning on increasing my dose each week until I reach optimal.
However, since starting NDT it feels like everything is making me bloated. I'm already strictly gluten free, but I'm finding dairy, nuts, eggs and even herbal tea is making me so bloated. It's very hard for me to figure out what foods are the culprit. Are there any foods that typically cause issues? I've tried to read up online and read a blog from ThyroidUK but that was more to do with interactions.
You're increasing too quickly. It's very, very easy to over-shoot your sweet-spot in you do that. It's better to increase by 1/4 grain every two weeks. And, now that you've nearly got to two grains, just one more increase, and then you should hold for six weeks and let the hormones catch up with themselves. Then, retest.
As far as I know, there are no specific foods that cause bloating in everybody. Everyone is different in how they react. Maybe an illimination diet would help you pinpoint the foods that are not right for you.
However, it might not be the the type of food that is the problem, it could just be that you have low stomach acid - a lot of hypos do - which means that food is not digested properly, and lies in the pit of the stomach fermenting and causing gas. Have a look at this article and try the home test at the end:
I know I’m increasing quicker than I probably should but my hypo symptoms returned with such a vengeance that I couldn’t stay on such a low dose for a fortnight. I’ll increase to 2 grains and then hold as you say for 6 weeks and then test.
Thanks for the link- that looks really helpful. I’ll start with the home tests and see what comes back.
Regardless of symptoms, it really is not a good idea to increase too fast, because you could find yourself right back at the beginning again. More haste less speed, as they say.
Good thought Pennyannie- I’ve just checked my NP Thyroid and it doesn’t seem to be an affected dose. Definitely something to keep my eyes open for in future.
