I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at the age of 12. since then i've tried ayurveda, allopathy & homeopathy. with regular exercise, proper diet and medicine i was able to keep this under control. still is - i have thyroid medicine -25mg every morning. dosage is not increased. i exercise & follow healthy food habits. now that i'm 25 & been married for almost 3 years, i started thinking of babies of my own. my periods are regular and everything- tsh levels are within the limit & bmi is normal. my question is can thyroid condition affect my chances of getting pregnant? please share your thoughts

You are doing so well . I see no reason why you shouldn’t be able to have babies. I have 2 children ... both strong and well .

all the signs are your body is responding to your wise treatment plan

I to have combined lots of natural things along with a low dose of Levo.

Keep up the good work .

Any children you have will be blessed to have you as there mama !!!!

DivyaK,

Yes, hypothyroidism can cause fertility issues if it has compromised other hormones, such as an elevation of prolactin for example. However, in this scenario distinct symptoms would be seen and as you appear healthy, your thyroid replacement meds & healthy living must be working well.

It is a good idea to let your doctor know of your plans because an increase in thyroid meds is usual upon conception.

Good luck.

One extremely common effect of hypothyroidism is that people end up with low stomach acid. This in turn can reduce absorption of nutrients from the diet.

Low nutrients and under-treated hypothyroidism will reduce your chances of getting pregnant, will make your chances of staying pregnant lower than it should be, make pregnancy harder on the mother, and can create problems in the offspring.

If you can get hold of your thyroid function test results from, say, the last couple of years, and also any nutrient results you should post them in a new thread and ask for feedback.

I’d also recommend reading up on these articles. According to Dr Izabella Wentz, known as The Thyroid Pharmacist, your TSH should be no more than 2.

These two articles by her are about the thyroid and pregnancy and are invaluable:

I would have given same advice as the others if you weren’t doing all the things you are doing .

Listen to your body . I trust we can get back to being healthy if problems are not left to grow .

I didn’t start looking at Ayurveda etc till

I was older .

Hope you have a good practitioner you can discuss things with . We are all so individual.

I too was diagnosed with hypothyroidism as a child, I had no problems with conception at all. My children are now 46 and 41, both straight forward pregnancies. No one tested / or tweaked thyroid replacement levels for either pregnancy. I hope you are lucky enough to enjoy adding to your family soon.
