Telling my doctor that I have started adding T3

Hi. I was diagnosed in October '20 and have been prescribed 75 levothyroxine by my doctor. I consulted a private functional GP and he has prescribed t3. After a month I feel good. Can my family doctor 'sack' me as a patient for seeking further advice behind her back? How have others managed this situation. I am quite worried about her reaction when she sees my next blood results. Thanks

I am not at all sure why a doctor can ask you to leave. Hopefully someone with more idea will help out.

My personal choice is to avoid private functional doctors. I had a very dear friend who consulted one, he had her buying so much stuff she finally had to stop seeing him as she was skint! She went back to her GP when all the stuff she had bought was finished. The GP arranged B12 injections and she was well again. At least until a fatal accident.

My own experience of taking non prescription items for my thyroid I have addressed with two different doctors.

The first a mature woman and senior partner took it in her stride. Told me she would monitor me and that’s what happened. She retired.

Next up with routine thyroid function test results, a new lady I had not met, not a partner but a salaried GP. We have only spoken on the telephone to date. She wasn’t anti ndt and indeed has been discussing with the local endo department and the lab how to get the best blood tests for someone in my situation. This she has done and I see her on Friday for that test. We have had a couple of hiccups along the way, however I am confident I will have a productive conversation with her then. I am encouraged is trying to get her head around it all.

I feel that as I have previously been prescribed ndt by the NHS my case is reasonable. I took the move back to ndt after a long spell of problems.

I was initially diagnosed around 1960, so a good track record of thyroid care.

I believe you are entitled to a second opinion and that’s what you have done.

The GP should have been testing every 6-8 weeks after you started levo and increasing a ps needed re testing every 6-8 weeks.

Full thyroid testing should have been done to include TSH, FT4, FT3, Antibodies, VitaminsD &B12, ferritin and folate. Were they? If not all the more reason to seek help elsewhere.

If you post blood test results on here you will get help understanding them and hopefully pointers to tell the GP where he failed and why you need the T3 prescribed.

Good luck
